Would it help to not have the bungee cords and let the chains go a little looser so they can move somewhat. That way they may get moved up onto the high side and not stay in the grove. The natural rotation would allow them to flop out. Not too loose mind you. But worth a try and cost nothing.

I agree with the recomendation to weld or use a quick link to join center of adjacent cross chains in the center. I have both v-bar and smooth chains, they preform equally well on ice but the v-bar digs up the hot top and concrete more. I also agree Ags are the only way to go but thats a whole different topic.
