Tire Question? L4740 with R4's

I have a L4740 with R-4's, I don't have a loader, I picked R-4's at my dealer advise telling me they were just as good as R-1's Plowing snow, MY OPINION THEY AREN'T.My last tractor Had R-1's, they were some..... better in snow, without a question better in mud. My question, anyone know if any manufacture makes a R-1 the same size as my R-4 so I can use the same rims? Or will it be cheaper to just purchase new rims & tires and sell what I have?

Why not add snow chains to the rear tires, just for winter??????

1/2 Mile of new black top road all up hill, chains would tear it up, I paid out to much to damage it this soon, I did purchase a 3 point hitch sand spreader, that has really helped with the snow and Ice, but still have the mud issue. Need to dump the R-4's

For what it is worth I've had good luck with the "rubber tire chains" albeit with turf tires. Without the rubber tire chains there were a few blacktop driveways that are steep enough that if traction was lost going up them, I'd slide backwards while the tires were still rotating forward. With the rubber chains I have not had any problems. Because a few of these incidences were very scary, I've also use them on the front for the safety factory.

Granted my experience is with turf and not R4's, but I'd recommend giving them a shot.

They will not mark up the driveways and ride nice.

Durability: I only use them in the winter and have 5 years on mine. My neighbor leaves his on all the time running through the woods over stone and he gets about 5-6 years before they get a little worn.

If I were looking to go R1 to R4 or R4 to R1, I'd drive hundreds of miles to pick up a decent set if the price were reasonable. Are your rears loaded?

Yup, need new rims to go between R1s & R4s on any tractor in aware of. R4s are a lot wider among other things.

A lot of people sip (grove) the lugs on R4s for better traction.

Chains without traction bars shouldn't tear up pavement as long as you make sure you don't spin the tires. Slipping will tear stuff up.

Yes they are Loaded with -20 Windsheild Wash.

Funny here but the best traction on blacktop is actually turf tires!!!!! That is if your snow removal equipment is working.

Turf tires rock on snow or better yet research what they use in Quebec. Snow tires for the machine.

This answers a question I've had as well. My used tractor came with R4s. In order to get enough clearance between chains and stablizer arms on the 3PH in the winter I have to extend the wheels so they are wider than the snowblower. This is a problem because there are drop offs on each side of my driveway.

Wanted to go to R1s so I would have clearance needed while not having the tires so wide.
