Yep.. I've priced it.. in many cases it's cheaper to get a genny with a tach drive repaired ( my lucas on my 5000 for instance.. ) than to get the alternator replacement with tach drive.
In fact.. I can buy a new lucas genny and regulator cheaper than I can buy the CNH alternator kit with tach drive for my unit... by a 'bill' almost.. I'm sure there are similar stories on the other units, as your friend points out.
Luckilly some tractors have alternate tach drive locations.. For instance.. on my 5000, A tach drive can be relocated under the oil filter canister.. etc..
