Yep.. I've priced it.. in many cases it's cheaper to get a genny with a tach drive repaired ( my lucas on my 5000 for instance.. ) than to get the alternator replacement with tach drive.

In fact.. I can buy a new lucas genny and regulator cheaper than I can buy the CNH alternator kit with tach drive for my unit... by a 'bill' almost.. I'm sure there are similar stories on the other units, as your friend points out.

Luckilly some tractors have alternate tach drive locations.. For instance.. on my 5000, A tach drive can be relocated under the oil filter canister.. etc..

My "favorite", the Perkins diesels (3 and 4 cyl.) have a mechanical tach drive on the rear of the engine block. Runs off camshaft. The cable is short (and CHEAP!) reliable, and easy to get at.

The more I work on old stuff, the more I like it.

Well, they told me what it was..... and it was "simple"....BUT.

Before I mention, here are the details....
- Original oil filter was still in the tranny when I opened up- it had black on the filter housing
- Oil that was drained was a little dark, NOT black, but dark.
- Looked okay inside....but....

The problem was a tranny tube that goes inside the bell housing. There are two clips on it that is suppose to keep said tube in place. Clips missing. And the tube became "loose". But.... they were worried since if the simple clips are missing, what could have been done (or not done) to the tranny inside. So....they are "errring" on the side of caution..... gonna swap one of thier rebuilts. Harvest is too close, and the lingering question if the tranny has been actually redone will be eliminated. My 'original' take out will be rebuilt this winter as the spare. Peace of mind I suppose is worth it.....

I could have put the 4630 tach drive, but the original 3000 tach swings differently then the 4630 (oposite). The electric tach works..... not sure how accurate, but works.

Can of worms is right...... The one w/ the missing clips, they'll go through quickly and use it as a spare, incase someone esle needs a tranny. It's the "core". They're willing to stand behind their rebuild vs trying to go through mine and then an "opps" happens during harvest..... and once again, I might be towing it down somewhere.

I forgot.. or maybee i missed it. The 'rebuit' trans you got.. that is now just a core.. etc.. and being swapped out. Did you get it directly from them ( did they rebuild it ) or did they purchase a rebuilt unit and install for you?

This shop always has a "rebuilt" in stock. They know what they are doing when it comes to SOS rebuilding. There are too many grape harvesters here that use the Ford SOS as the drive/power unit. They rebuild the tranny them self. IF and when a tranny goes out in a harvester, it is easier to have a tranny ready and waiting then trying to repair..... There is only so many days for harvest.... so time runs short when a tranny issue crops up.

The "so called rebuilt" tranny that we installed in it currently (that came w/the harvester as an "extra) is the core now. The original that we took out will be rebuilt this winter as a spare for me.

Not quite sure who rebuilt the one that we put in. I was told from the person who I bought the harveter that it was rebuilt....

Haven't picked it up yet...... suppose to be this comming week. Busy week... in the middle of fixing 2 semi's too.....
