Actually the E.P.A. has future plans of outlawing anything but dripless (flushface) q.d.'s. So, we know what the future will bring.

Central Florida excavating conditions are completely different than from the northeast. My Mom lives in central Florida and I have spent quite a bit of time down there. A good friend of mine is also a mechanic for the state in central Florida. He lived up here 40 years before relocating. Earth moving conditions are night and day. We have more stone in one bucket of an excavator up here than Florida soil has in an entire dump truck load. Clay soil is also much tougher digging than sand based soil.

How much is the cylinder on your mower cycled as compared to an FEL. What's the average working pressure and average spike pressure on a mower cylinder as compared to an FEL. I rest my case.

And I do agree that good maintenance prevents problems, but Doug's issue has nothing to do with maintenance.

Keep resting the case.. I'm not saying you are wrong.. however you do seem very intent upon making anyone with a different opinion of you wrong.

yes florida soil has less hard rock.. however we have plenty of limerock and sand. I'v found sand to be the #2 hardest thing on equipment next to salt. IE.. equipment in sand mines and salt mines usually have the lowest life span.

Working pressure / spike pressure? Most a applications I see are 2500psi working pressure limits. I do however the earth engaging equipment will see higher spike pressures. Guess I better go check my 'dry' qd's on one of my loaders.. it's only 50 years old.. it might start leaking any day now!

epa rules? sure.. very well could happen... by the time they do 'outlaw' them.. it will probably many years or decades in the future... as such with any gov't plan. Look at incandescent lighting. i don't see a big rush on that issue.. even though it's day too is coming..

Again.. for the 4th time.. I'm not saying you are wrong.. I'm saying there are other issues to think about.

Another poster touched on one of the more important ones. Once you go to a different than 'normal' set of QD's.. every other piece of ag equipment you run into will need to be swapped or adapted. lotsa time there ( and money! ).

Don't feel bad though.. it looks like you are a hyds supply place. i don't blame you for trying to up business by asking people to change out all hyd qd's enmasse. If I had a product for sale.. I'd probably try to drum up business as well... it's the american way. :D

I've been looking at couplers and fittings a lot lately since I have to add a remote circuit to my old IH 404. I'm certain I read somewhere the gold Pioneer couplers are higher quality items than the silver variety. My guess is TSC kept the price the same but is now selling the cheaper coupler.
Actually, they are still selling both. I own and use some of each. But my worst problems by far... with this depressurized hose leaking issue... are with the silver couplings I purchased in matched sets.

Dougster,
When I was plumbing my BH for QDs to run my post hole digger, I bought expensive Pioneer QDs from Grainger (grainger.com) and hedged my purchase by buying cheap QDs from TSC. Once I handled the cheap QDs from TSC.....I took them back. No leaks to date on the QDs I added to the bucket curl circuit.

Interesting. I noticed from your post hole digger pix that you used the gold-colored ones. I guess we now know that Pioneer has two lines... and that it pays to pay for gold.

Dougster,
The QDs I used are 1/2 inch pipe thread and the numbers are
nipple 8010-4 (Pioneer) and 2F781 (Grainger)
coupler 4050-4 (Pioneer) and 2F771 (Grainger)

Yep. Just checked a couple of male ends that I haven't used yet... and they are Pioneer VP8010-4P-DC. These are gold-colored, poppet style and "connect under pressure" as well. These are intended to be used for my hydraulic thumb project (i.e., for connection to the rear remote set) ... and as I look at them now, I do notice that the package says: "No Drip Poppet Valve"!

The leaky ones are silver-colored and ball type. Perhaps the package should have said: "Drippy-type Ball Valve"!!! ;)

But this was all they had at TSC in the quantity I needed (i.e., two matched pairs) for my old 1/2" utility hose set (which became and still is my *temporary* "bungie cord" root/rock grapple hose set).

But it still makes me wonder why the female ends leak so much. Is there any difference in the female ends (couplings) in regard to ball-type vs. poppet type???

I can't see why there would be.

do you connect/ disconnect alot.. like many times a day? The more you do.. the more they wear.. If they aren't clean.. they can leak.. and will drastically wear down... I keep my ag ends squeaky clean and they don't drip...

My grapple lines (i.e., the current problem lines) are typically connected and disconnected every day or two. On the current, three-week job, these lines have been connected and disconnected only three times. Each time they are disconnected, they are flushed with WD-40 and capped. Each time they are connected, they are uncapped, flushed and dried first.

After all this discussion, I really am convinced it was my poor choice of the cheaper (silver matched set) series, ball-type couplings that is messing me up. I am still confused about why the female end couplings are leaking, but no matter. I don't like their external design anyway (mere ridges vs. diamond-cut grips - very hard to connect and disconnect with oily hands). I will replace them all with the more expensive (Pioneer gold series) poppet-type fittings at the first opportunity.

For all of your leaking female fitting, I'll bet the seal surface has a bad seal (o-ring). Or a bit of dust or dirt. They are very touchy to that. You are absolutely correct that they should not leak, but hydralic systems are always weeping some, especially at the ports. As for the quality of the parts from TSC, I will not question, because I have bought hydralic parts from JD, Case/IH. Ford/New Holland and have had trouble. I do tend to stay with Pioneer style (brand) fittings now on all of my equipment. I am sure some will argue others are better, but I use what I know works.
