Tires tires and rims

 / tires and rims #11
Hey Charlie -

I have really searched and I have not found much on wheels

I did find this inexpensive source

http://www.millertire.com/ they don't list the sizes we need but I called them and they have many more sizes available

As far as offset - they have some - but if they don't have the right offset they will sell you the rim and hub and you can weld it in at any offset you want - So I was going to buy from them

Not sure about the dimensions - I am sure they are stamped steel - buy I think PTs are as well - He said they are very strong and can withstand I think over 10K pounds - good luck

Also, I have an extra set of 26x12x12 bar tread tires and wheels - virtually no use. I may consider selling them
Anyone interested send me a PM

Charlie: Since I'm no longer using mine on the lawn, and after a year I am getting fairly frequent punctures, my next set may be bar treads.

Want to match punctures? My bar treads against your turfs. These darned tires are wimps (not counting this weeks mower-blade-through-the-sidewall).

There are a number of tire sources on the net. I hit them by searching for the tire size.

Did you find tougher tires than the OEM 4ply Titan Tru Power ATs? The 6 and 8 ply Titans have a larger rolling radius which rules them out, torque being limited enough as it is (but we do like the speed). I haven't looked beyond that.

I haven't found a source for wheels, and would like to hear if anyone knows of one.

It does seem PT would use stock wheels but its possible in this case these wheels were originally sourced for the 1850 duals and required a special offset. Naw, that can't be right, its the wheel motor configuration that determines offset and that's a stock item.

Here's a thought on the puncture problem. PT does not recommend filling the tires due to the extra weight loading the wheel motors (at least I gather that is their reason). However, this tractor is sold with duals. Those two 23 inch wheel assemblies plus spacer must weigh at least as much as a filled single 26. And that doesn't count the added load from the greater width. So why can't we foam the single 26es? What happens when the mower blade attacks the foam filled sidewall - is the now expensive tire toast (to say nothing of a bit hard to get off the rim)? How do they ride? Anybody have experience with foam filled traction tires?

These punctures gotta go! I spent a good part of 2 days frigging with the mower blade puncture. After my plugging attempt failed I dropped the tire & wheel off to have a guy put a tube in it. Left it with him overnight. Got home with it the next day only to discover he had mounted the tire backwards. Took it back - he put a kid on it who spent an hour trying to get the beads to seat. And in the end, ripped the tube. No, they didn't have another tube on hand. By now I was ripped a bit too. (Could it be the guy was just getting even for the three hours he said it took him to get the sealant out so he could patch the puncture)? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

He did say the tire had many small nails and bits of wire and stuff in it - so the sealant (Gemplers heavy duty) does work on the small stuff.

Torn between having a pile of spares and foaming a set,

On another note regarding tires - why do they put a valve stem on both sides?

Have you considered 24 x 13.00 - 12 tires? I think these have a smaller rolling radius than the 26 x -- and they are available in 6 ply.

I don't find them on the Titan site. Google only turns up a few in that size, all turfs. Where did you find them?

John,

Here is one source for 24 x 13.00 -12 tires

Good question. I don't know, either, but my little simplicity tractor has them, too.

Thanks Bob. Those I've seen. It's bar tires that interest me and I haven't found any. The 24's might be just the ticket for those who can use a turf.

I bought 6 ply Dayton multitracs about a year and a half ago for the front on my 425 from Cedar Rapids Tire (shop.crtire.com/index). They REALLY helped with the Mesquite thorns. I was getting at least one flat a week with the original tires which were TWO ply. With the 6 plys I've only had one. They do ride a bit stiffer so I had to play with tire pressure a bit to balance being able to pick up a bucket of gravel versus being able to stand driving it. Too much air and it's like iron wheels. I had to do the same thing with my wife's golfcart with exactally the same results. CR Tire has been my small tire place since. BTW the PT rears are still original and have never had a flat. I guess the fronts always pick up the thorn.
