Tractor
Thinking of buying a KUBOTA MX5100
I asked this question in an other thread but i cant seem to find a tire specific thread for any tractor although mine in related to the KUBOTA MX5100 HST 4WD

I have a 15 Acre flat to undulating land with about a third rather steep land with a 40-45 degree angle track to maintain one in every 5 years. [to be used as tourist scenic walking track]

My first jobs are going to be getting rid of some pine stumps and some old pine trees yet to be felled...they regarded as weeds by our environmental people so I dont need a permit. A great deal of landscaping and moving dirt around and possibly enlarging a dam when we get our next dry summer...it been pouring rain over last few weeks so dam never going to let low this year.
[ and snowing up in our little mountains...Mt Hotham..in summer ...amazing.]

Then got a fair bit of water and sewer pipes to lay over time and repair and re-route a new pathway to be used as a scenic walk and then a fair bit of extra planting of native and flowering plants to attract more wildlife birdlife to attract the tourists...but as I intend to also grow chilli on some of the leftover I'm not going to worry too much about chilli eating rabbits, birds, foxes, possums and kangaroos/wallabys ...one reason I chose chilli in the Yarra Valley Wine growing region in Melbourne Vic 3775 Australia.

I did a Grape growing course years ago on possibly growing wine grapes but decided against it because of all the poisions which needed to be sprayed on them...was glad I never did as now there is a glut of vines planted in original beautiful horse country.... And when we had some serious bush fires in 2009 ...the vines got smoked and useless for wine making ontop of the worldwide wines glut.

Luckily the tourist balloon enthusiasts still get the benefits of the magnificant views of the Yarra Valley in the mornings... tho...you wont catch me going onto one of those...lol

After I have done most of landscaping and driveway maintenace ...i'll settle down to growing a few Acres of Chilli plant varieties, a little garlic another rabbit favourite im told...lol...and lettuce and garden fresh vegetables mixed in and Watermelons are now starting to grow well in this Yarra Glen region... my brother up the road accidently grew some delicious water melons over last five years...never heard of in this colder neck of woods in Victoria. I'm sure its not really going to be that easy to grow my chillis and corn but even I dont like hot chillis but I do like Corn, Water Melons, fruits I already got ....

The soil around here never been cropped so is true virgin organic soils ..its either been native bush, pine forest or cattle and horse grazing land so we dont have the poisoned land problems they have in other spots. Dieldren was a problem about 50 years back and now some farms cannot be used for growing vegies or selling cattle which graze on such properties....some rich brown volcanic mountain soils are now used for growing non edible flowers Tulips... Tesselaars are very famous in the Valley for Tulips..they have annual Tulip Festivals..

So I suppose my question is are Ag tires [we spell it Tyres] going to be the best way to go. It will get muddy in winter on the flat.

You have to have a permit to cut trees on your own property?

Yes, the [red lefty wing] greenies minority are taking over the world and I planted a fair few trees myself too...luckily we have bush fires sometimes..unfortunately several people died in 2009 only up the road from me and my brother nearly lost his and familys when the fires took hold of the undergrowth NOT permiited to be grazed or collected for firewood. We have had a change of State Government now and they permit firewood collection without a permit now and the Cattlemen have been allowed back into the high country crown land to graze their stock.

Yes its a disgrace and thats why I been previously actively involed in politics as a candidate to getting rid of that greenie pestilence without success unfortunately ..grows like Green Water Algae but now involved in underground politics and have been contributing to your Bob Livingston Personal Liberty Digest in recent months and supporting Dr Ron Paul...but i try keep politics out of these threads even though it does affect our lives and ability to operate any business for which they then expect us to freely pay our taxes..

They just keep poking their nose in everyone elses business...i could go on on what i think of them...but i can ramble on for days and get all worked up ...but you know what I mean...wheres Ruby and Oswald when we need them...lol luckily these days the pen is mightier than the sword

Sorry forgot to mention yes we need a permit if tree or vegetation is not a weed which luckily the say a Pine Tree is a weed as it was introduced into country from elsewhere and if any tree is above a certain height or diameter need to get a Shire Council permit for a fee too..lol

While back I was moving some soil around and putting it next to an old gum tree ... the council came to visit due to a nosey nearby property owner and they 'directed' not to put soil ontop under branchline of this valuable old and sometimes dangerous tree otherwise that would kill the tree off...

For the ground engaging work you describe you'll be doing, I'd get the R-1 Ags hands down. I've had both and I was not pleased with R-4 performance for most of my tractor duties.

I have R4's on mine but for the work you are describing I would go with the R1 (AG) tires, much better for ground engaging work and crop managment

My experience is that I have been pleased with my R4s except in mud. My next tractor will have ag tires. The industrial tires do not clean out if the soil is wet.

I think the best use for R4 tires is for industrial uses - basically, lots of loader work - especially if it happens to be on concrete. They carry weight better and wear slower on concrete than ag tires. For what you describe ag tires are best.

Well said - I agree 100%!!!! For your use R1's would be perfect

I went with Ag tires and have been very happy with them. If you have really rugged rocky ground or lots of thorns then the extra thickness of the R4 would help prevent flats. Otherwise I would get the real tractor tires.

I couldn't imagine having to ask for permission to cut a tree on my property. It use to be I could do almost anything but recently they've changed it so I need to get a permit for a septic system. It use to be more than 10 acres and you didn't need one.

I have Ags on my MX5100. I will say they will flat out tear up a lawn. That's the only down side I can think of, but if you are doing all ground engagement, they're the way to go. By the way, I checked the number of ply's between the R1's and the R4's and they were both 6 ply.

I purchased a new tractor this past summer, I ordered it with a snow plow and R-4's, I had the rears loaded. My older tractor had Ag's and weren't loaded, that tractor had traction problems, I plow a paved road 1/4 mile up hill all the way,it's about a 25deg incline. I've been worried that the R-4's could be worse? Yesterday with our first plowable snow, I was able to plow, the tractor/R-4's combo did great, plowed up hill,I couldn't do that with my older tractor. New tractor is a L4740 w/ 84" plow, older tractor is a L4200 w/72" plow.

I had R1s on my L2900 and other than they absolutely destroyed my lawn and runway they were fine. I have R4s on my MX5100 and so far I love them. They don't have the traction of the R1s, but with 4WD it hasn't been a problem. I have been cleaning out an old pond that is about 1.5 acres surface area with this tractor and I have found the R4s do a much better job than the R1s did. I can float above the muck better with them due to the larger footprint and the tires are not as susceptible to damage from the sharp rocks as much as the R1s were. When I am using the tractor off the road I pretty much keep it in 4WD. I love the MX5100, to-date it has done everything I expected of it and more. I can't imagine not being able to cut trees or anything else for that matter on my own land! We have some property in Canada that has more restrictions than here (higher taxes too). But, you can still cut the trees or bushes really without any interference. I really believe that most of us (Americans) are really fed up with big brother government, but change is difficult and slow.

With either tyre tread style your life will be in jeopardy every five years.

No way in H***'s half acre you'll find me on a wheeled tractor on 40-45 degree slopes. I plan to draw social security until I'm a hundred and five.:D

I have Ag's on both my tractors, on dirt all the time and they work great!

Lube, fueling, and hyd systems on tractors are not designed to work on those slopes. Also, even with AGs, I dont know of any tractors that will climb a 45degree slope, much less have the reserve traction to do any work. Even if the tractor would you would have to stay on it unless you carried climbing gear for ground work. ... Those were some hardy tourists.
