Ah! You are draging the brakes to put a bigger load on the motor! Yeah I knew that this would temporarly fix it.
Does she skip like that when she is cold too? Did this tractor had some engine work done? Did she skip like that since you got it or did that pop up recently by itself? Does she skip while idleing?
Not sure what to tell you but RickB gave you some real good guesses. I am not sure if a broken valve spring / bent valve lifter rod was covered in this thread, but just in case it wasn't, it is now.
I am afraid... but I guess it is time to take measurements and then take one thing after the other off, check for wear, dirt and specs.
I'd start with a new fuel filter unless you recently changed it. Then I'd take the valve cover off and check valve springs and valve clearance. Then I'd be doing a compression test and test the injectors. After that you are either inside the block or into the injector pump. Unless it has something to do with a timing, or valve adjustment, I don't think it is cheap to fix, unless you can do everything yourself.
My old Case TerraTrac was skipping all the time unless I had it working hard. Ended up doing a full engine rebuild because the engine was worn so bad (wouldn't start without ether even in the summer). First thing we noticed, I had bent valve lifters, broken valve spring, and half of the piston rings missing and or broken. Pump and injectors were fine.
