I recently recieved this book:

https://www.equiptrain.com/tlbbook.htm

Haven't read it yet but a quick scan of the pages shows it to be pretty interesting -there are sections on technique and methods, saftey, and maintence of the regular yellow TLBs - but alot of this knowledge can be applied to agricultural equipment.

Does anyone read that book? does it worth it? I guess that even it was written in 1996, I guess all the knoledge is still acuurate.

I just questionne why the PDF format is 300$ and the book is around 30$ I don't get it.

I read this book when I first got my tractor w/BH. I would recommend it if you are doing ground engaging work. It has some good tips and techniques for FEL and BH work. Even a section on felling and moving trees with the hoe.

The higher PDF price is probably to limit the inevitable wide distribution of the book between people around the world. Do you think that if it were inexpensive it would not be posted here, for example, and downloaded by every interested member of the forum?

I spent a hour or so looking through a copy of that book at a friend's house. It seemed very thorough and full of information. At the time I had no tractor or real interest in having one, so I'd look at it differently now, and am thinking about sending for a copy.

I own the book I have read most of it. I think it is well worth the money. David

Well, I finished off the book.
What I liked: shows specific techniques for things like, connecting trenches, digging footings, procedures for planning placement of spoil, moving the TLB using the BH, FEL technique, safety, etc - all good stuff.
What I didn't like: a bit too much repitition. Some sections seemed like filler and some pages were repeating information given just a couple of pages previously.
All-in-all I think it was worth the cost. But as the author writes: nothing will teach you more that acutal seat time.

It is a good book and well worth the money. It answers some of those how can I use my loader/BH to save my back.

I think that the repetition you found is due to the book having been formatted as a lesson plan, or a textbook complete with summarization and short quizes following each section, no?

For a time, one of the things I did was to manage an integrated team comprised of civil servants, military, and contractors, 30 people designing and producing instructional materials for US Naval warfighting systems.

Some of the team were ex navy instructors come back as contractors. They used to say it was standard practice in the Navy to tell students what you were going to tell them, then tell them, and then tell them what you told them.

I haven't read the book in question but sometimes if you want a section of instruction to be able to stand on its own you have to give information that may be covered in another stand alone section. The redundant information could be eliminated if everyone read the whole book cover to cover and remembered it before using the information.

If you go to the book to find out about a particular operation it will be a good thing if you get ALL the info you need without having to be referred to other sections although some of that info may be repeated as part of other operations and procedures.

If it were interactive hyper-textual (computer based) instead of a print-on-paper book then the redundancy could easily be eliminated. It isn't.

I also highly endorse this book you are referring to, Operating Techniques for the Tractor-Loader-Backhoe , by Gary J. Ober, ISBN: 0934041075 : 9780934041072 ; OCLC: 12949633. Many regard it as the "Bible" to TLB operations. What I like about this particular book is that it is appropriate for any level of operator expertise.

You can probably get a copy either directly from your library or through an inter library loan. I live in a rural area (like many of us TBNers) and used [WorldCat.org] Search for books, music, videos, articles and more in libraries near you with the help of my county librarian to find this book and have it loaned to our library. You could purchase it through Amazon.com as well as, directly from Equipment Training Resources: Tractor-Loader-Backhoe Safety and Training Book - Operating Techniques for the Tractor-Loader-Backhoe , like richarbro first mentioned.
