I guess I don't know the difference between circlips and snap rings other than Americans call them snap rings and Europeans call them circlips.

These are made of spring steel, formed out of wire, and have no loops or hooks of any kind on the ends. For what they cost (vs. the cost of labor @ shop rate), I always figured the easiest, fastest way to get them out was to crimp them exactly in the middle so the halves could easily be picked out of the groove. They can be gotten out whole and re-used.

The housings come out/off as you suggest.

Not really. There isn't much to it. Rotate and tap/pry out.

The easiest way I know of is to pull the shaft out on one side until it falls out of the bearing on the other side. Then use it as punch and tap the other side out. I have not damaged anything so far that wasn't going to be replaced anyway.

thanks. I got the supports out no issues. Got the circlips out fairly easy as well. My trouble was with the seals. I ended up scaring the seal face (seat) of the support while trying to cut seal out with a dremel tool. The cut doesnt go all the way across so I believe with some RTV the seal will still work...I hope. So the other one I was able to bend down the seal from the inside of the support enough to then punch the seal out from the outboard side of the support flange.

Thanks for all the good advice. We tried replacing the seals and bearings (including O-rings) on our TN75 DA, but still have a bad leak (now both sides). We ordered new parts (including the shaft) and are ready to tackle the job again. You didn't say anything about the best way to install the new seals (and, in our case, the shaft). Do you have any advice for a "shade tree mechanic" on this project?
