Did I just rain on the parade for suggesting the possibility of keeping the manual crank?!?

Just my opinion but you spent good money for the tractor and blower, you're buying the more expensive hard sided cab from Curtis, why skimp on the chute rotator? Do it right the first time and be done with it. Snow blowing with the window open will certainly reduce the effectiveness of the cab and you'll likely get sick of that pretty quick.

Depending on how close the handle is to the window, when you lift the blower, it may hit the window, that will make your day suck. Pushing a switch and sitting in your warm cab and putting the snow where you want it to go is the way to go. I followed the thread I linked to and I am so glad I did it makes the job so much easier. No welding involved just some bending of aluminum in a vice. I purchased 4 window motors from eBay and the original is still in use, they do last.

A side from the price difference. You have to decide whether you want a cab in the summer or not. I have a soft cab on my BX24 and it is plenty for me in North Dakota.

Minotbob,
I'm also researching cabs for my new Deere 1026R. I had a FEMCO softside on my old Deere 445, FEMCO doesn't make one for Deere 1000 series. Curtis, Cozycab, Originalcab, Tektite all have cabs.

I see you have an Originalcab vinyl wrap. Is that sufficient compared to a structural softside cab with heater? The prices I was quoted are 2.8x more for a soft-side compared to the vinyl wrap. Trying to decide if it is worth it for the next 20 years.

Your thoughts, please? Thanks.

Do you cab owners find yourselves removing the cab seasonaly? How much of an ordeal is it?

Appreciate your replies. Thanks,
-Greg

Hi Greg,

When I had a FEMCO soft-side cab on my Deere 445, I removed it seasonally for several reasons. It was too high to get under some tree branches & the clothesline posts where I mow. It also raises the center of gravity, making slope mowing more dangerous. The FEMCO soft-side cab is nearly identical to the Curtis soft-side cab.

Though the 445 was a Lawn & Garden tractor, it was the largest Deere made, akin to the 700 series today, so not that much smaller than a SCUT, so the analogy for your application is close. I am in the market for a new cab for my new Deere 1026R SCUT, btw.

Anyway, because the soft-side cabs still have structural mounting, they are big & heavy, too heavy for 2 guys to lift. So - I bought a rolling overhead gantry crane to lift / lower the cab. I put two screw-eyes in the roof at opposite corners. Then roll the crane slowly away. Since the advent of permanently installed ROPS, will have to roll to front of tractor now, instead of rear.

Still debating whether I want to pay 2.8x more than a vinyl wrapper for a new soft-side cab that takes longer to install/remove. Took about 4 hours to install or remove.

Hope this helps.......

Well guys I'm going for it, with wife's approval! New bx25d and Curtis hardcab. I'm going with the 60" mmm up from the 54" deck I had in the bx24. The cab will be outfitted with a 20k btu heater, heat booster pump, ventilation fan, switch box, front and rear led lights. I believe I'll get the wheel spacers from brotek. Taking advice from the forums and shopping in Kentucky for this, a good deal I believe. I swung by my local dealer to look at the 25d, sat in the seat, reclined, and was sold. Although I like the cab integrated from the factory on the b series, I did t like the way to mower deck linkage works, just too impractical IMO. looking forward to the new tractor

Great news on the new addition to the family:drink:,

One thing make sure the height of the tractor with the cab and anything on the top will fit into where you plan to store it. On my BX2200 I have to remove the yellow flashing warning light off the roof of the cab. I forgot about this the last time I backed it into the garage and took it off the roof via the garage door. It has a magnet to hold it into place so it was not a big deal.

But I would hate for you to have to move the garage door up 3" because it is too tall. Measure twice....

I would love a cab on my BX25D but being on a pretty steep slope I am already concerned about CG height as it is. Do you know the weight of the cab? Not that it gets too cold around here but it does rain a little. A little heat and tunes w/noise canceling headphones would be a nice luxury for sure! With that I would probably drive it instead of my truck two miles to the local store. Who cares if I can only go 5mph? :D

here's a link to the Curtis details on the BX25D cab. Kubota Compact Tractor BX70 Series
Hard cab is 350 lbs. soft is 300 lbs. not terribly concerned about weight aloft and it's impact on travel because I believe the brotek wheel spacers will be a significant help in widening the wheel base. there have been more than plenty times on my BX24D where I ran just FEL, no backhoe, and often over weighted the loader. well you know the rest, a little 1 wheel riding on the front left/right. that's what you get for trying to haul too much at once and hastily neglect rear weight. I must say I am psyched for this new rig, and hope that the transaction goes smoothly and easily, so far so good.

I don't foresee myself removing the cab seasonally either. with doors that come right off the hinge, and the rear window that pops out, front windshield that opens and a fan for circulation, I think i'll be in style when it comes time to try the 60" MMM this spring.

certainly some new things to be careful about though including height clearance, branches, overhead doors, weight aloft; no doubt the cab will add a dynamic to operation. considering noise factor, the way I figure I'm pretty much always wearing noise protection with earbud connected to tunes so hopefully this added noise with the cab surround will not be a major issue.

and Tom, from what I gather there is no single point on the cab that is higher than the ROPS; so I imagine she'll fit just right where I've been keeping my 24 all these years. I am fortunate that the Mrs. gave me the green light on this, for she certainly would not be keen on me raising the roof to house the new toy...ahem... essential piece of equipment that is.

so far as the chute rotation and deflector actuation...I've got to get to this project and appreciate all the pointers

Happy Holidays,
-Greg
