Just went and replaced my worn out impact wrench with a 600ft/lb Ingersol Rand. Then I promptly stripped the Nylok bolt holding the center blade on my Woods RM550 mower. Guess I will have to try and find a 15/16ths EZout, as I dont have one that big. Gotta love the power.

did you break the bolt off or just strip out the threads?

I shouldered the head of the bolt.

They make some, what I call easy-out, sockets that work great. It's just a hard socket that has tapered angled flutes cut in it that will catch the bolt head. In this case, what's left. The ones I have are for right hand thread and actually work. If the bolts are left hand thread, these won't work.

I found it!
Craftsman 52165 10 pc. Impact Grade Bolt-Out™ Damaged Bolt/Nut Remover at Sears.com
Those only go up to 3/4 inch. I have already been to sears looking for them, it appears 3/4 inch is as big as they go.

 I'm not sure I understand, but I would assume you're talking about taking the corners off the bolt head, and wouldn't that be from using a socket that was a little too big instead of just the power of the wrench? And I also assume you did this while tightening, not loosening, the bolt? You mentioned turning the power setting down. Almost no one does that; instead they just don't hold the trigger and let it keep hammering as long. The power settings are most frequently used on assembly lines, or similar places, where the same degree of tightening is needed on every bolt the person tightens. They usually have an air supply that cuts off automatically after 5 seconds, so they don't have to worry about how long to hold the trigger; just hold it until it quits. And I don't know how many people know it, but on most impact wrenches, turning that power setting down only affects the forward speed; i.e., tightening of bolts. You still have full power in reverse.

No such thing as to much power. :) Back when I purchased my first #5 spline drive impact gun that put's out about 3,500 Ft/Lb it took a little getting accustomed to also. After snapping off a couple of 3/4 inch diameter bolts I learned to let off the trigger a little sooner.

Did you strip the outside of the nut? If so, make sure your using the right sockets. A 12 point will strip out the nuts much quicker. I have the same Ingersol I think. Its a 400/600 ft lb impact. I need a bit more "on" drive as I cannot get the lug nuts on our JD hoe tight enough. I also need a 1 1/8" impact socket instead of the std Craftsman 12 pt deep socket I have been using.

Another thing to remember is to NEVER use chrome sockets on a impact gun. They like to explode. If you haven't yet, buy a set of impact sockets.

Try using a good quality, large vise grip, put in on as tight as you can squeeze it shut. Then try loosening it. Could also try pipe wrench but I don't think they work as well. Your fortunate the threads didn't strip out. I usually use air gun lightly on mower blades when tightening the bolt and then hand tighten with wrench.

I was loosening the nut with a 12 point socket, the same that I used to take the other two out. I have tried the vise grip and the moknkey wrench route. I guess I will take it over to a buddys and let him weld a nut on.

To be clear, I was removing the bolt. The wrench has adjustable power for tightening AND loosening and I was set about middle ways. I was also using a craftsman socket, my impact sockets dont go that big. I am getting ready to order some now. Thanks for the tips guys.

Like DieselPower said, you're running a serious risk using a chrome socket on an impact wrench. What model is that Ingersol-Rand anyway?
