Grind/file head of bolt as flat as possible. Center punch the bolt. Use a small ( 1/4" drill bit and drill it either all the way thru or as deep as you feel comfortable. Then use a bigger size LEFT HAND twist drill; it should back out easily. Easy outs usually break. Using right hand twist first helps torque the threads in one direction and when using the left hand drills the bolt should come out. If impact did not back it out, it is tight; use penetrating oil while drilling.

Last night on "MegaTools" on the History Channel, they mentioned "the largest impact wrench ever made; the Ingersoll-Rand model 559, so named because that's how much it weighs!!" Guess that one would either easily back the bolt our, or just as easily twist it right off!

Hmm - Guess I have been lucky as I have never had an EZ out break and have used them more than a few times.

Oh, yes, they are quite fun to get out when broken ... trying to aneal them before drilling is my favorite part :(

Homebrew - I don't understand

Why would you try to harden the EZ out before you drill it out?

Anealing "softens" the already hardened ezout, so it can be drilled out with a standard high speed steel drill [bit].

That's what they make cobalt and carbide drill bit's for. I don't think I even own HSS drill bit's anymore. All of mine are at least cobalt.

Got it - I thought anneal meant just the opposite - to toughen or harden

Thanks

I'm not sure how far away rubber seals are from the busted bolt, but when all else fails a little heat often seems to work for me. If you could heat the bolt to red and get a vice grip on it, it might just come right out!

Of course, you're right. This thread would be a great opportunity for you to demonstrate, or dictate the steps for, drilling out an ezout with a cobalt-steel drill [bit] ... or carbide, if you prefer ...
