Tiller too much tiller?

Bud, you arouse my curiosity when you say you don't see a shear pin. Of course, we get in the habit of calling them shear "pins" (which my old boat motor had years ago), but I guess you know they're actually a shear "bolt" and nut. Is there not a bolt and nut through the end of the drive line on the implement end?

Oh, I am absolutely sure the first time you get a big old 6 or 8 inch rock hung in it, you will be able to find the shear pin (1/2 inch bolt). /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif You will soon realize that if you let the hinged back plate all the way down, the tiller will pulvarize dirt that looks like it came out of a bag of topsoil.

We are posting at the same time. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I like this topic of too much tiller? I wish I had too much tiller, but an 8 footer would be nice if I could afford a heavy duty model. Guess I will settle for a 6 1/2 or 7 foot heavy duty gear drive model when I wear this one out. You can wear them out really quick if the bolts get loose on the gearbox and leak all the 90Weight oil out! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Guess it also depends on how you use them. If you are going to till 10 to 20 acres at a time, you put a lot of hours on a tiller and it will either be a really good one or not worth taking to the junk yard.

Bird, As far as having a bolt to shear, forget it. Didn't notice that until I got it home and started to tighten bolts. This must have been made to use with a slip clutch because the front of the gearbox on the tiller has a 1 3/8" six spline the same as the PTO. There is also a plastic guard on the front of the gearbox 8" in diameter, and 6" deep. That covers the whole end of the drive shaft. Naturally, both ends of the drive shaft are the same. Am I going to have to buy a slip clutch to use on that?

Bud, I wouldn't know what to tell you, then. I'm used to a drive shaft where the ends appear almost the same, but with that slight difference for the shear bolt in the implement end.

Hi Bird, Back again to bother you. I called the phone number again that Mark gave me, and asked what I do for a saftey factor in case something jams under the tiller? This guy that sells, and takes care of costumer relations told me there is a sheer bolt in the gear case. When I asked him if I take 16 bolts off of the cover and dump a quart and a half of gear oil in the field to change a bolt, then what? So he asked some one that knew. The guy that knew said the sheer bolt is on the rotor shaft. So now what do I do? As far as I can see, that thing was made to use a slip clutch. If you look at that tiller, everything is solid from the PTO on the tractor to the rock that will jamb under the tiller.

Bud, I'm sorry, but I just don't know. I sure would like to see that thing. I never heard of a sheer bolt being inside the gear case, but of course, I'm sure there's a lot of things out there that I've never heard of. I don't know how to describe some things with the typed word instead of a picture, but my Bush Hog equipment has a horizontal bolt on the drive shaft right where it attaches to the gear box on the implement. And my Howse brush hog has a bolt right through the shaft, i.e., not a splined shaft on the gearbox. I just can't imagine yours not having a shear bolt of one kind or the other on the back end of that drive shaft.

Bird, The King Kutter II that you would like to have has a spline on the front of the gear box on the top of the tiller(that gear box is exactly like the one on my tiller), and it has a slip clutch. I think this tiller I just bought was supposed to come with a clutch. Maybe if I keep on them they will straighten this out.

Bud - My Agric has both a slip clutch and a shear bolt, but I'm not sure about the model you ended up getting. Didn't you get an owners manual with it? They often have an exploded parts diagram in them that will show you the shear bolt location and describe the specific size and grade it uses.

A lot of tillers do come with a slip clutch. Mine did. Go do some reseach and find out quickly. They will get you a slip clutch rather than have to take back an improperly configured unit that they can't sell to anyone else.

There is no shear pin in the gear box. It will take a tooth out of the gear box or your pto shaft on the tractor or twist the drive shaft into.

If your tractor and drive train are strong enough (and mine is) the tiller tangs will just go "ping" and break completely off the shaft if the slip clutch is not adjusted properly (or froze up). /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
