Too Much Traction?

It's just like everything else. It would work just fine as it is machinable. Unfortunately the cost was out of sight. Only the space program could afford that kind of stuff and their tractors really don't need it. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I might have it: if we make them from Tantulum, they'll be more than twice as heavy as steel and since Tantulum is immune to almost all chemicals, I'll bet it'll withstand Calcium Chloride. Do you think cost will matter? We were looking at a piece of 8" bar today for around $6000.

Re:L4310 Wheel Weights for Sale

FOR SALE.

Wheel Weights for L4310, manufactured out of kubotanium. Far denser than Uranium. Atomic weight estimated at 1460.
Each wheel weight weighs 8250lbs.
Full satisfaction guarantee, if your wheels spin with these weights on them money cheerfully refunded.

Unfortunately you must replace your standard wheel weight bolts with ones we manufacture out of solid unobtainium, heat treated during a plutonium reaction./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Oh, and back to serious...are any of use using chains with R4s? I saw a log skidder with dang near bald tires running a chain that had big flat circles against the tires with a small "wallet size" paddles attached on the circles.

Re:L4310 Wheel Weights for Sale

Here in the Pacific NW, the loggers have used chains on "ANY" tire. I say that because all the tire has to do is carry the chain. The chains have gone from store bought with paddles to "you name it!". All depends where your running. All depends on what the welder had in his scrap heap to add on. We have what was once regarded as a coastal skidder. Now I can't remember the number or model but this thang would pull anythang, anywhar. Including fully loaded Kubots'a and New Holland's. The color was yellow but you could hear the turbo in the next county. They do go for the longer lenghts with fir, hemlock and western red cedar. When I first went to work for Weyerhaeuser in the sawmill as a electrician, the carriage was 40 foot and the mill took everything up to 6 foot at the cutoff saw point. Larger at the butt end. Larger logs were split in the pond to make it up the log haul to fit the machines inside.
I guess what I'm leading up to is if you need this kind of traction, get the "Machine with Too Much Traction!". They are usually yellow in color and we "AIN"T" talking Yanmar!. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Kubotium (or whatever)...if it smells like sushimi (or w-e), does that mean that Newhollandium weights will smell like garlic, that Johndeerium metal smells like Gawgah peaches?

At least my NH is made in Italia, I guess some of yours might also smell like fish, huh.

[Lotta guys obviously married with little to do on Friday nite]

Here is a better question--why do dealers charge so damn much for weight? The list on front wts for mine was almost 600, a few hundred pounds.

Re: Too Much Traction..?..wen.

wen,
Yes I agree about the AG tire and the ribs, and I shouldn't compare the 4wd tractors of today agaainst yesterdays tractor.
on the farm we only took the tire chains of the Farmall during the summer months, for the Ag tire just wasn't enough of a bite.
The tire chains did indeed help and I always leave my chain on the Kubota which has truf tires.
There also were dangers of using tire chains on yesterday tractors, for the grip was there and alots of times the front end would rear up.
Remember the days of the iron wheels and the danger, but the the traction indeed great.
Todays tractors with the 4 wd mostly replace the tire chains use,but for some of us the old ways are still the best ways/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I hope your doing well and enjoying life./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Too Much Traction..?..wen.

Thomas,

Yeah every once in a while I have to write something about the old farmalls. I always think of it when people are talking about using the brake pedals for turning and the hst pedal is in the way. Guess old Farmall had that one figured out. When you pulled the hand brake on each wheel, you were applying the brake - no linkage needed.

We never used chains on the farm, but probably because they were expensive.

Re: Too Much Traction..?..wen.

Wen you are dating yourself by talking of the old farmall's with the hand brake. Rule of thumb is if you need chains to do field work you only hurt the the field.

Re: Too Much Traction..?..wen.

Yeah, I know. But it was hard for a 12 year old to crank them since they had no electrical system and only a hand crank.
Hmmm. That is not true, it had a battery and lights, but can't remember a starter. Maybe it was broke.

Re: Too Much Traction..?..wen.

Wen, my first tractoring experience was with a little John Deere, circa 1938-40, and I know it didn't have a starter, battery, or lights (magneto ignition). And you're right, it was a pretty good job for 12 year old to crank.
