Often it is the state tax incentive that makes or breaks the deal. I looked at getting solar, and the system would cost $30K. You get $9K back from the Feds, and CT offered $3K. So cost was $18K. Annual electric bill is $1800. 10 year payoff. Not too bad. My brother in MA installed a system in January 2017. Cost $30K. Got $9K back from the Feds. Gets $2K a year from MA for 10 years, guaranteed based on his solar output and guaranteed by the solar company. So after 10 years, he gets his $30K back. Plus he gets $18,000 in free electricity over the same 10 years. His payoff is less than 6 years. It was a no brainer for him.
