I up the size on mine recently. I just went to a store and got a relatively cheap 25 dollar plastic toolbox. I bolted a couple pieces of angle iron to support the larger toolbx, painted to match tractor onto a piece a frame on the back, then bolted the tool box from inside the toolbox to the angle iron. works great and I enjoy the added space.

I got a nice metal tool box form a local farm store. I flipped over the brace between the fenders that holds the orange triangle. Turned end for end and upside down the holes lined up perfectly. I used a few of the supplied brackets and drilled a few holes. Added a little gray paint, reinstalled the triangle and it looks way better than factory !! :D

I used a dry box that I purchased at walmart. Fits good and has a rubber gasket on lid to keep water from entering.

That looks like a factory install...way nice...

I bought a 24" toolbox and made some mounts to bolt it in place. The mounts had to be welded with multi-angles.

I bought a max size box that would still not interfere with things. As you can see in the photos the box is full.

My JD 790 has a flip up seat which allows the toolbox lid to open all the way flat, making for nice tray space.

1 toolbox (waterproof and lockable)
4 ss mount bolts + lock washers
4 ss carriage bolts + fender washers and lock nuts
3' of tool box liner (no rattles, no wear)
Scrap metal (angle and flatbar @ 1/4" thick)
Powdercoat paint (I need to find some JD green)

PS, I like using bags to keep things organized in the box and make it easy to grab a particular bag for a particular task.

PPS, Don't bother hacking on me for drilling and tapping the ROP for this. I don't have a guard on my table saw either.

Happy trails,
Dave

I envy the room you guys have with those large boxes behind the seat but if I put one there on my Kubota L4330, I don't think I could see the ground behind the tractor. It requires a little stretching as it is nothing back there. I always like to see what I'm going to hit with the bush hog or what kind of trouble the scarfiers are about to get into. savedbyzero, you might want to duct tape a cardboard mockup back there to check out visibility.

jcm, I agree with you.I like to see when box blading. That is why I haven't made one myself. I'm still searching...

I'd love to have one like that behind the seat of my JD4300 but popping the hoe on and off kinda limits me. Been meaning to make something to go on the FEL assembly but I have chain hangers on the back and chainsaw holsters on the sides so my tools tend to ride by my feet in a pinch.

i just put mine on the back. Its one of my great uncles old rusty boxes that i wire brushed the rust off of and painted black. Got some u bolts and cut a piece of plywood to support the bottom and a piece to dispruse clamping power on the inside and clamped the whole thing using u-bolts to ROPS.

pic from my album of it.

Looks more like a ballast box than a tool box. ;)

I just mounted 2 ammo boxes on each side of the tractor. One for tools and one for chains. They were waterproof before I drilled the holes.... I need to find a good way to mount some cool water for drinking on hot summer days....

I saw the post for the JD 790 tool box.....and I thought I would show my smaller rendition for a behind the seat box. I clamped the bracket on instead of drilling, and the smaller size allows me to see the implement operations quite well. But, you got me on size....nice box. ;):)

Because tractor tool boxes must be strategically placed,.. which generally impairs our vision back there, . . . (and there isn't much choice) ,....the next best thing is: . . "Magician's Tricks" ?

Yes, . . the old "smoke and mirrors" eh? Well, hopefully NOT smoke, . but I'm a great believer in "mirrors" and don't honestly think I could drive a truck, (trailer, train or bobtail), . tour-bus, dozer, tractor, road grader, wheelbarrow, 3 inch nail or police cruiser without at least one mirror! (just kidding on the barrow and nail) but, am totally lost without "Rear-View-Mirrors" on "any" vehicle!

So why not get some good, large, convex, (or flat) mirrors and strategically place them, ....~"with proper protection"~ so you "can" see down behind that toolbox and watch your grader blade or mower or other implement by bouncing it off a couple placed even more strategically up forward in the cab or open-station?

Since installing my 6 inch wheel spacers on either side of my rears, I find the tires coming extremely close to trees, buildings, rocks etc. With the "Cab" you cannot easily lean out over the fender to check, so I greatly "depend" on mirrors. So far I've simply re-positioned the side view mirrors I built so they focus on the lower part of the tires.

That's a temporary fix, but I'm working on plans for extra mirrors and equally important, some sort of safety cages for them so I don't continually brush them against branches etc !

People complain that they can't use mirrors,.. I couldn't either years ago,... but they're just one more thing that's time, neck, back and nerve saving! Getting used to them is like anything else, ..(time and effort),.. doesn't take long.

Soon you'll wonder how you managed without them!! Amazes me to see even a pick-up truck driver,...throw his arm back over the seat and raise up to wrestle around and look out the rear window to back up. Just so much easier (and comfortable) to use mirrors.

Anyway boys and girls,... "Tractor-Mirrors" (and lots of 'em) is just a suggestion to get around the now blind-spots created by your nice new tool box. I hope it was taken in the spirit given, . . and not as another lengthy, boring post by the old tug. (I seem to have trouble being "brief")

CHEERS!
. . tug

PS: ....of course there are always those new fangled "Rear-View-Cameras",..hey, hey!!! Oh I wish I'd thought of that first and saved all the above typing and editing, ah well........

Like others have done I used an ammo box. I built a plate with a single leg and mounted it to the back lip of the body behind the seat. These pics were actually taken to show a light I mounted but you can see the toolbox behind it. Now like others have done as well I need to mount one for my chains. BTW, another gadget you'll see in the first pic is my "bubba mug" holder. It's a 2lb Foldgers metal coffee can that's had a 1" slot cut down the side and screwed down to the body. The sharp edges are covered with plastic edging.

I did the same thing as Rob on my Jinma. I love the plastic ammo boxes Rob. Need to source a couple of them.
