Re: Tooth Time

I'll have to get my korean translation book. My unholy bucket will be moving about 30 yards of rock tomorrow. Wish it was bigger.

Re: Tooth Time

I bought a hay spear yesterday from Markham for less than 1/2 the price a dealer quoted. I live about 40 miles from their location, so I just drove over and picked it up. I was impressed with the quality. Nice people too. He took the time to talk about his business and point out some of the features on his attachments. There were a few mean looking root grapples on his lot which I would love to get, but just can justify it right now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

I'm sure you'll love the toothbar. It's a good deal.

If you like the toothbar, maybe you can buy a grapple. Since I'm pretty close, I could pick it up for you and "break it in". /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifAfter the appropriate break in period (i.e. when I'm done with it) I could just forwarded on to you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tarheelman,
Might just take you up on that offer if you'll pay shipping to CA. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Ha!
What's he asking for the root grapple anyway? What size?

Re: Tooth Time

I got it done after about 7 hours of steady loading, running, dumping, spreading, and returning. Mostly 1.5" clean rock. I took some pictures and may open a gravel thread for grins.

I was actually glad not to have a toothbar for this since I did a lot of backblading to spread the material. No problem getting heaping buckets with the flat edge.

Re: Tooth Time

I need to measure my bucket, but I think I will be calling markham tommorow for the toothbar, It sounds like it would be very good for digging and raking through the brush...

I was wondering why you were thinking of mounting the toothbar for your gravel adventure. Toothbars are great but I couldn't see the advantage for that particular task.

Re: Tooth Time

I was under the impression that the toothbar would allow me to sink the bucket into the pile easier so that I was assured a full bucket with minimal tire slippage. It seemed to make sense if I was scooping up say 4 inch rock that the flat edge would bounce off but the toothbar might allow it to pierce.

I made sure to clean the bucket real well to make mounting the toothbar easy in the next week or so.

I chose the toothbar primarily for brush clearing, digging stumps, raking brush into burnpiles, and for digging into solid native soil.

Re: Tooth Time

I guess I see your reasoning but I'd always assumed that the toothbar was for digging, brush etc not for piles of anything. I have not used mine for anything but brush and digging so don't have direct experience with gravel etc, I was just surprised you mentioned that use as a possibility. Glad you didn't need it and that the gravel cleaned out your bucket for the toothbar addition.

By the way, one hint for installation: I mounted the bar temporarily and then drilled holes on both sides of the bucket where I had marked the holes. I had trouble with threading the second bolt after attaching the first side. It would have been smarter to drill one hole, mount that side then measure and drill the other side from the inside using a smaller bit and using the toothbar attachment hole as the guide. Then use the 1/2 drill bit from the outside of the bucket to finish the hole. I think either the unsecured bar moved a tad during my initial hole marking or that attaching one side slightly changed the geometry so my second hole was just far enough off center that I ended up stripping the bolt trying to force it in. No big deal as I just filed the hole about 1/16 and got a new 1/2inch bolt...but it could have been avoided.

Good luck, I am sure you'll find lots of uses for the toothbar and wonder how you ever lived without it!

Re: Tooth Time

3RRL,

I did not get a quote as my pockets were empty. I think he did mention $1,700.00 for a 72", but I'm not sure if that even sounds right as I have not priced any grapples.

I'm sure you can call and get a price. All I can say is that it looked well-built and durable.

Re: Tooth Time

Thanks for the advice. I haven't received it yet. Plan to be on the machine all day Saturday so I hope it comes soon.

I am no stranger to having to oval out a hole so that it lines up with a part. I've got a rat tail file that I really like for that.

Re: Tooth Time

I ordered mine from marham today, nice people, but they said they are out of teeth until after the first of the year so I will have to wait..... They did say maybe a little earlier though...

Re: Tooth Time

Uh, oh. Mine was supposed to ship on on Friday the 9th and then I would get a call with the tracking #. No call, and now they're out of materials? I was hoping for a delivery before this weekend but if I need to wait until next year then that's OK I suppose. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Tooth Time

I left messages yesterday and again today regarding pricing on a 6 foot tooth bar. I am surprised at the lack of responsiveness from some companies. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Tooth Time

You left messages with markham? I found each time I call they answer and take care of me right then and there. They are est though... I had to remember that.

Like I said before sorry about the bad news on the teeth, they just told me that on the phone... She said possibly they will get more in before the first of the year, but they are telling everyone after the first so no one gets angry if it doesn't happen...

Re: Tooth Time

Sorry Highbeam, wish you had yours too. I just load it into the Blazer...geez that thing is heavy. Got to drive 250 miles to the property. Also brought my drill press, arc welder, Top & Tilt, new hand drill, another 10'x20'canopy, all kinks of tools and vises and a bunch of other stuff. My tires look like a "D" now. HA! I'll get back Monday with some posts.
