Forgive me if I've over looked someone mentioning these already.

What about "Australia" with Nicole Kidman? Set in the early days of WWll, it is about a 2,000 head cattle drive to the coast, the Japanese bombing of Darwin and trouble from the competition. At 2h 45min it is a bit long but worth watching.

What about the 50痴 James Stewart Westerns?

Night Passage
Man from Laramie
Naked Spur
Broken Arrow
Winchester ?3
Where the River Bends

Only Winchester ?3 has been mentioned. Other good ones:

Ride the High Country
Warlock
Broken Lance

A couple with modern settings

Bad Day at Black Rock
Lonely Are the Brave

I had forgotten Lonely are the Brave. Great movie; it was released, I believe in the late 50's or early 60's. We were living in Albuquerque at that time, and it was supposed to have been filmed there. "****** Whiskey, when I say "hup", I mean "hup".
I know one thing, there are several movies recommended here that I haven't seen...so I intend to make a list and make sure that I get to see them. I have seen most of those listed, although it's been quite some time for a lot of them. Some of the old movies, like "River of no Return", we thought were awesome back in the 50's when seen on the wide screen. I remember in one of the last scenes, when Rory Calhoun was shot in the back, there was a split-second gush of blood, which most of us missed, except for my Mom. We all sat through it again just to see this phenomenon! I suspect that movie would seem a bit too melodramatic for audiences today, but we really loved it.
There was nothing like the sound of hoofbeats, a new 42 inch Magnavox color TV and a glass of Bud to calm the wild breast; and Saturday morning Hoppalong Cassidy was King!

But wasn't that set in South East Oz? That couldn't count as a "Western" :D

If "Quigley" and "Australia" mentioned, just have to add "Man from Snowy River". Although, it was made in SE Oz... not Western Oz :D

You beat me with Maverick. I really like that one.

An older western comedy with Robert Michum and Arnold is great, The Villain.

I like all the Bonanzas, although not a movie. I watched them in the 1970s and since then never saw any until digital came out 2 years ago. Then they started showing them here. I had a steady diet of Bonanza until I watched about 5/8 of the 14 years or so they were on, but then they started to repeat. Now I am starting to watch Gunsmoke.

Nice thread. Gives me some more ideas.

Here's another great movie that hasn't been mentioned: The Stalking Moon...with Gregory Peck. It's a real thriller.

Lots of Great Movies! Who can name the Movies (Westerns only) that John Wayne died in?

Well, surprized little response on this. Seems like John Wayne only "died" in a few of his movies.

Only two being Western.

This was a great trivia question. Thanks.

The other movies he died in The Fighting SeaBees, The Sands of Iwo Jima, Reap the Wild Wind and Wake of the Red Witch.
