Totally OT: Power Plant tour

If humans had their sheit together then Nuclear would not be a problem. The more complicated something is, the more likely it is to fail. The more fail safe devices you put in, then it seems there are even more chances of failure. I don't know if it was truthfull or not. Who knows? But I saw a documentary on the Fukishima (sp?) disaster that was deeply disturbing. It was not just poor planning. It was in the end just another case of a complex human designed system, not working according to plan. Much like Chernoble (sp?).

And then the lies and disinformation.

We've got a fairly complex program in a European designed and built machine that I work on. A lot of IF-THEN logic built in. Most of the time, it really does work well, and you can see the reasoning for the safety's and all the conditions that have to be met before the machine will run. However, once in a while, something way out in left field happens and the machine won't run. You troubleshoot the problem, find the broken wire or bad sensor, or dirty switch, but its on a part of the machine that is not running, nor in the program to run. The error is unassigned, meaning its just floating out there. I can see if that part of the machine were in the program to run, how it would be important. But someone left out the part about IF- this part is programmed to run, THEN- apply this error and stop it from running.

I can only imaging a nuclear power plant being just a wee bit more complicated than this machine, and the thousands of IF-THEN's that have to be met to keep it running. If one is forgotten, bypassed, shorted out or not thought of, things can go wrong. That's why I like mechanical controls VS software controls, and why I like redundant systems. A pair and a spare.
