I made this 2 years ago- its quite crude, but it saves a lot of work digging with a shovel. The 3" X 10" cylinder that raises and lowers the boom has been removed for the pic- I am just using the winch to keep the bucket from dragging the ground.

The engine is an 11hp briggs, the pump is an old single stage 8gpm gear pump/hydraulic motor, made for 1000 max rpm and 1000 max psi. There is a chain driven gearbox that reduces the 3600 engine rpm down to about 700 pump rpm. The dipper cylinder is a 4"X16" and the bucket and pivot cylinders are 2"X8".

The trailer is actually an old high clearance ag spray cart that has been turned upside down and the axle stubs have been moved to the rear. The boom and dipper arms are each 5ft long, 5" schedule 80 pipe. The boom and dipper pivots are made from 7/8" ID dimensional tubing (with grease zerks added) and ther pivot pins are 7/8" grade 8 bolts.

The green pivot base is actually the final drive from a 20 year old JD combine (it will swivel 360 degrees but my pivot cylinder setup will only swing it about 110 degrees).

The bucket is 8" wide, made from 3 pieces of 8" channel iron. It holds about 5 gallons of dirt when level.

It will dig 4 feet, but has trouble in dry clay. I never got around to adding stabilizers so it must be hitched to an immovable object like a parked tractor or else it will just pull itself backwards instead of digging.

the chain drive system that reduces rpm for the pump- this makes pull sarting that 11 hp engine quite difficult. I originally used a belt and tensioner to drive the chain, but it kept slipping. Why not use the electric starter on the engine you ask? Why that would be too difficult- because then I'd have to add a battery... etc. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
