Towing a dump trailer behind a tractor, and ??? on Sure Trac dumps in general

I have a 14' x 7' with side racks and load it with hardwood and dirt and my tractor handles it fine. Put a set of quickcouplers in the raise and lower lines and your remotes will run it 5 times as fast as the 12v power unit will. BUT be sure the trailer cylinders will handle the pressure, most remotes on these tractors are 2500psi and that 12v unit will be in the 1500-2000psi range. My tractor is way too big to go into my dump trailer without taking the boxblade off and the bucket hangs over the tailgate, that is a no no in Michigan. CJ

I'd expect the main limitation (tractor use) you'd run into with your friend's trailer relates to how rough your trails are.

Meaning - a dedictated off-road trailer will often have better ground clearance and approach/departure angles - same issues as with a properly set up off-road truck. The down-side of these off-road trailers can be handling at high-speed when heavily loaded, as the Cg is high.

So, if your intended farm use is on relatively flat/friendly trails, I'd say your friend's trailer would make a great all-rounder for you - for the "right-price" of course :thumbsup: .

I'll certainly update this thread if I purchase the tractor...and if not, I'll "try" to remember anyways, but of course, it wouldn't be a very interesting update anyways. :laughing: I will be meeting up with him next month and we'll chat about it then, there is a good chance if I buy it, it will be over the winter sometime. I just got done spending a lot of money on some medical bills (in addition to a couple new attachments) and need to build up my toy fund again.

Thanks for the tip on checking the pressure ratings of the trailer, I never would have thought about that. :thumbsup:

Load contact areas like inside the bed, I could see having done with a spray-on bedliner; I know a couple guys who ended up spraying their entire trailers (of various brands) once the inside paint was mostly gone and the outside paint was heavily wore and scratched.

Not trying to get this thread off topic but Linex has a coating that is specifically for dump trucks and trailers that is slippery.

I noticed that you intend to pull the trailer with your tractor. Heavy trailer, tractors and steep grade dont go well together. I would advise a trailer with brakes and adding a brake control on your tractor. 4WD tractors arenta bad a two wheel ones, but you havent had a ride until you head down a steep hill and end up sliding all the way to the bottom, hopeing and praying that there isnt anything down there to create a sudden stop.

I've not inquired about it yet, but I was thinking along the same lines (brakes on trailers for use behind a tractor) and was wondering if the 7 pin trailer socket on the back of my tractor would power a set of trailer brakes properly or if there is more to it... Another thought I had was making a cart with a trailer ball on top that could be connected to the drawbar and a trailer set on the ball to turn a standard trailer into a makeshift wagon. Depending on the parts sourced for the cart, some form of manual brakes could be incorporated.

I've often wondered about the problems associated with towing a heavy trailer behind the tractor. I can see what your saying about it not being a great idea in the wrong circumstances. I actually thought of using one of those 3 pint hitch trailer ball attachments and welding a large "scarifier" or "ripper" tooth on the bottom of it as an emergency brake if I ever lost control going down a hill :laughing:

I think being aware of the danger is more important than anything though, and I would be cognizant of the danger of pulling a heavy trailer around on slopes, and adjust my loads accordingly. You bring up a good point muddstopper and it is one of the things I am concerned with, and one main reason I posted this thread. If I end up buying this trailer I will think hard about adding a brake controller to the tractor if/when I'm planning on towing any heavy loads.
