Toyota Tacoma brakes

I was just about to report back.
For those of you suggesting that the rear brakes out of adjustment, bingo! Today I had the time to pull the rear drums off, I added a whole bunch of "out" on the drivers side, like 3/8" to the adjuster, and a little less on the other side. Everything feels normal now. I adjusted it as close as I could and still get the drums over the "ridge" and then did the reverse braking deal. There is really not enough room to hit the adj. "star" from the outside.
Both sides were dry upon inside inspection and it just was way out of adjustment. I stll hold to the story that the brakes were normal just before, remember I had just driven this truck for the first time on the test drive with the prev owner an hour or so before this (seemingly) happened on the way home. ??
Thanks for the help, I'll still get the flush & fill done, prolly at Toyota. From what I've heard from everyone, these little trucks are good for a long time, and not that I havn't taken care of my other vehicles, but this one will get some of extra attention.

didnt read enough and close enough to see it was drums. and i see its solved. thats good

Just wondering... are the rear pads also the emergency brakes? Maybe the previous owner never used them, but you set the E-brake which pushed the rear pads out of adjustment?

Wondering if there are any Tacoma owners out there that may have had this similar condition.
I just got a nice clean 2012 with 45k miles, my first Toyota. During the test drive and half the way home it had what I would call normal braking & pedal "feel". After coming off the highway on the way home from picking it up, and braking for the stop at the end of the ramp, the pedal felt as if it blew a line and had a lot of travel, on the next few "pumps" it felt better with each one. It was raining hard and the pumping works pretty good, so I got it home & in the shop to inspect it the next day when it was dry. No leaks and the brake fluid res. was fine. Reading some of the o/m books, it sounds like the abs controls quite a few braking, traction & handeling functions, leading me to wonder if there is an issue with the abs system. There are no lights, bell's or whistles going off in the truck. I bought it from a nice 72y/o gentleman that was the original owner and user and I think if I get back to him prompty with this issue, he may help with the fix. If I need to get into the abs system, it'll prolly need to be done at a dealer and I could see it getting expensive. On the other hand I don't want to bother him if it's a minor one 1 or 2 hundred dollar problem. Any thoughts?

My brakes on my 02 GMC 1 ton felt mushy and toward the end of a stop would be what I thought were bad brakes. It ended up being front wheel bearings. It seems a feedback sensor was off a little bit and caused the problem, and the whole bearing had to be replaced. This is a 4x4 truck. I never would have though an expensive wheel bearing but the dealer knew the fix right away. Talk to a dealer because maybe it is a known problem.

Yep to the last poster, bad hubs and bearing can show up as mushy brakes.

And These toyotas have E brake shoes if you have rear pads. There inside the rotor in the drum portion the outer main rear brakes are pads. But he had shoees for main rears. I screwed that one up a few posts back thinking he had rear pads.

I'm the original owner of a 2006 Tacoma (4X2 and V-6) with 125,000 miles. Still have original brakes and have had no issues with them.

We have always had very good service from Toyota cars and trucks... they had great resale on the lot and few problems... even with high mileage.

Of course... the SF Bay Area has fairly mild weather... so your mileage may vary.

The positive "reports" is a large part of my decision on this little truck. I think I bought it right ($) and look forward to be able to echo your experiance.
