I wonder how Toyota's reliability ratings will hold when owners start using trucks the same way owners use Ford/GM/Dodge trucks (plowing, hauling big trailers, pipeline companies, etc.)

So far all they've had to do is sit on the porch while the big dogs do all the work.

I'm not saying they won't do well, but the reality of the situation is that the domestic full size trucks do the vast majority of all the grunt work pickups are used for. That makes those same pickups wear out faster than their Toyota/Nissan counterparts.

Dont' you think?

That first article is proof that "warm & fuzzy ecologically-concerned" Toyota is in it for profit just as much as "the dirty old domestics" like GM, Ford, Dodge. Toyota smeeled big profits on full size trucks, so now they sing a different song on CAFE and pollution standards.

Everyone is soooo impressed with Toyota's hybrids & fuel economy and Consumer Reports ratings, yet GM has more vehicles that get 30MPG or more than Toyota. GM also has a hybrid full size Tahoe, Toyota has yet to build one.

Imagine that.

We had a Toyota 1992 truck with 385k on it when it was sold and pulled a Bullet bass boat for years with it's 4 cylinder.

I think Toyota has recognized and issue and taking care of it's product regardless. I just bought a 98 Tacoma with 175k miles on it and not think twice about the quaility.

As far as the big dogs doing all the work, you are right. But a lot of the big dogs don't get the maintenance needed when it is needed and most NEVER get a good uncarriage washing or other cleaning. I think maintenance is a big player in dependability/reliability when it comes to apples to apples.

I see a lot of Chev Z71 trucks/Ford F150/250's polished and never even pull any type of trailer breaking down all the time. Then I see Toyota's running the back roads of the oil fields , pulling logs , etc that have 300k on them and still running. So it could go either way.

Like I said, I just bought a Toyota with 175K miles on it and did not blink an eye but would never buy a GM/Ford/Dodge with that mileage.

JMHO.

American manufacturers have underestimated import companies for years. I can say the early 90s Toyota and Lexus engines were second to none IMHO.Today, I personally do not think they are up to par as they were in the 90s IMHO. I have 2 old Toys that with 22RE motors. They will get restored even if the frame has to be plate welded. I personally believe this is one of the finest, if not the finest 4cyl'ers ever made!

Rust yes the is a problem in it's self and depends on what model and make you buy. A Tercel had much less body paint than a top of the line Camry and Lexus had much more factory anti-rust treatment than any Toyota of the same year.

I called the local Toyota dealer to look at a 08 Tundra. They had none on the lot and all were sold before they shipped. I do know that part was true. Alot of people here are switching here to Tundras from one of the big 3. 381 hp, 10,000 plus towing and Toyota badge is what is driven this. Plus they are working on a diesel also. Me I do not need 381 hp!! I declined to look at one because they no test truck and the given problems I found.

Even at 48k with the specs (with specs that are posted). Blows any Hybrid on the road today. The GM Volt can be plugged in 110 to charge it back up at home. If you drive under 40 miles a day no gas is used!!!

Rust holes in the frame of my '02 Ford Taurus. 2 years ago Ford told me, "Sorry, it's out of warranty."
