Then, they must be the most dependable vehicles.

"See em burning every night in the middle east on the evening news"

Overheating huh, shame.
Back in the 60's, the HiLux was the first mini pickup I ever saw. Big turn signals on the front hood/fenders. Since then, I think California has more Toyotas then anyplace in the world. TresCrows would be proud. We also have the most Nikons and Kubota BX's. It's heaven /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

What I never understood about the Marshall Plan is why didn't we send them our aging factories...and build the new stuff here?

I am not trying to bash anything. The only reason I chimmed in is the comments that have been made that toyota is the most robust truck anyone can buy. Thats just bull.
Fine product but they are light duty.
If I treated my dodge SRW 1 ton (thats what I mean by a 3500) then it would also last forever.
If you doubt it go look at the rear end or any other part of the heavy duty rams next to a tundra or tacoma. Not in the same league the ram 1 ton is massive in comparison.

So if the post started with toyota's are great trucks and are relaible I would not have even commented. But to say they are the toughest......... it just ain't so.

Phred, you are exactly right. There are times I would prefer the nimbleness of a little Tacoma or something similar like my old Datsun 1600. On occassion I yank around a 12' long X8' tall by 6' wide dump trailer. It's heavy enough, throw in the load and I enjoy having the big brakes on my F250 as well as the four sets on the trailer. I think more a question of hauling a trailer is the ability to control the trailer and not the opposite where the trailer tells you where to go. I don't even get remotely close to having that feeling with the Tundra. Edmunds even mentioned this in their 2001 review of the Tundra, weak brakes. In the end, my next truck as much as I would like a nimble one like the Tundra, really limits my ability at the rental yard where virtually everything I rent needs a 3/4 ton minimum. I'm very interested in a "new used" Dodge with the quiet Cummins. After 2 good Fords. I would like a change. If 4WD was of any interest to me, I'd consider this thing called a Taco or Jeep, but I have no interest in that, I'm a hiker all the way. I can go places many animals cannot go much less Tacos.

( I have been driving Toyotas for years, what first impressed me was the engineering under the hood. No spark plugs trapped, everything easy to get to, etc.
I tried a Chevy S-10, biggest piece of crap I ever owned.
Now I even insist that my Toyotas are made in Japan. )

My experience was the opposite: My Chevy S-10 was more reliable than my Toyota Pick-up. I even kept my Chevy for 40,000 miles more than the Toyota, and it still required fewer repairs. Heck, my 7 year old Ford truck had fewer and far cheaper problems than my Toyota had at 3 years. The magazines stated that Toyota was the most reliable. Did they lie? Are our personal ownership experiences insignificant when compared to the aggregate? Maybe, my Toyota was a Friday truck. Do they have Friday trucks in Japan?

I also have a hard time understanding Toyota fanatics, or any brand fanatics for that matter. When your Toyota breaks down and leaves you on the side of the road, like mine did, do you say it's a Japanese truck, so a similar American truck must have broken down three times already? I'm not a buy American fanatic either; I own a German car, a Japanese SUV, & an American truck with a Mexican engine. Are any of these the absolute best vehicle ever made? I doubt it. Will I feel compelled to repeat purchase if one of these runs perfectly throughout it's life? I haven't so far. There are a lot of great cars and trucks out there, please don't let twenty year old prejudices against certain brands prevent you from giving them a look. The Toyota brand isn't number one anymore, and hasn't been for several years. The fact they may be overtaking Ford in the near future shows that they are just another big car company joining the ranks of Ford and GM. If you hate Ford and GM why in the world would you like Toyota? They are all becoming the same thing. Toyota has Lexus, but they also have Scion which ranked near the bottom in quality. They kind of sound like Chyrsler, Dodge & Plymouth to me. Build one nice, build one for the masses, build one cheap. Say it isn't so.

BTW, the my above thoughts apply to tractors too. I have a NH now, but who knows what I'll buy next. This doesn't reflect poorly on my NH. I'm very happy with the tractor, but brand XYZ may have something that make's it a better fit for me in the future. I'll get to shop all of the brands next time around, and the best tractor for me will win.

( Tres ... the MOST interesting thing missing from these auto discussions is:

After WWII, the USofA decided to rebuild the japanese economy (fair is fair since we razed it anyway). Through governement procurement, the Ford Motor Co. sent hundreds of consultants, managers, tool and die, blueprints and managers there to show them how to build cars.

Not only did they pay attention, but they clearly improved on our knowledge base.

Beaten once again at our own game.

Wasn't so long ago that ANY foreign car was taboo here in the US. NOW it's "toyotas are good cars but ..... " blah blah blah.

The blindness is maddening! ~~~~ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif~~~~~~ )

No, that was debated already and in fact several times in one of the Kubota bashing, "my tractor is more Amurikan than yours" threads from some time back. Know all about the good doctor and all that.
We as a generation cannot see beyond national borders, our future generations will not be that way. We are moving towards a Pan North American economic entity and with that who knows the end results.
All this emotion and darn--I did not even instigate this thread. We might ought to get back to arguing Line-X or maybe another group hug /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. J

I think we are already beyond that.

Sorry to hear that your experience was not good with the Toyota's, I guess I look at my personal experience.
The main reason for me is the superior engineering. Nothing cramps me up more than a handle coming off in my hand, sloppy tolerances, etc.
When the American companies can produce a car like my Camry, then I will buy one.
Good luck and remember to carry a cell phone, join an auto club, and don't travel too far away from a service center in that thing! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When there is a foot of fresh snow on the road, I'll drive safely past the Camry with my Aztek. With no rattles or squeaks, no warranty issues and a nicely put together vehicle.
