Tracking the Asian Giant 'Murder' Hornet: A Deadly Pest Has Reached North America

Those pics are European hornet, also called giant hornet or the brown hornet, gets its common name from its introduction from Europe into the New York area in the 1800s. European hornets are currently found from the eastern seaboard west to the eastern Dakotas and south through Iowa and Illinois to New Orleans.

The giant Asian hornet is even bigger.

We just dealt with European hornets a few months ago. Had to call in professionals. Those were some mean bugs.

There痴 been stories like this in the past. The python definitely was legitimate, they are now part of the Florida animal kingdom.

Sensationalism - maybe, maybe not. I'd lean more toward the not.
There' lots of history with imported bugs being a problem: Gypsy moth, Japanese beetle, emerald ash borer, Mediterranean fruit fly just to name a few.

And there are the bigger non-native animals that do a lot of damage such as Nutria, the pythons you mentioned, and I've heard of some of the African exotics escapees that are out-competing our whitetails. Our ecosystems are changing whether or not we intended them to. Somethings we will never see again.

I mean like the “ one sting can kill you “ claims. That’s a very slim possibility.
The news media sensationalism over the past 20 years can be ridiculous and border on dangerous at times
I remember when we were “ all going to die “ from the infected mouse droppings in New Mexico back in the 90’s. (Hantavirus). It was very real, but the fear factor from the news media was over the top.

The article I read say they can be as big as your thumb. If they are that size - get out the 12 gauge. I do have a smaller version and they can be down right aggressive. Bald Faced Hornets. This smaller version do raise real havoc on bees.

We had some bald faced hornets before and they are nasty. I sprayed a few with my wagner stain sprayer doing some railing because they were dive bombing me. We have Carpenter bees but they lack stingers so I trap them or swat em down.

The Duck says you're wrong there. The males don't, but the females do and can hit you more than once like a wasp since they don't lose their stinger.
