Tractor backhoe - homemade

Let's say I can "see" the whole thing in my head and can anticipate how it will behave...that's why i draw so much before doing anything.
I know what you're talking about, and therefor i assume you got the point out of my calculation and the remark that it doesnt tell the whole picture of forces... I allways lay out a design on gut feeling, then calculate if it generates lifting and breakout forces desired, then check if the chosen section heights can take the strain... Then all i have left to do is fine tuning for weight savings ;)

Just one remark: If you extend the line of the main boom cylinder untill it meets a point perpendicular to the main boom pivot on the swing frame, the effective arm length over which the force works, isnt much: If you pull the backhoe high up, it will have little force. It will have most force when digging deep. I think perhaps it would be better to put the boom pivot point at a slightly bigger horizontal distance to the boom cylinder attachment point, so it gets a bit more lifting force with the boom fully up. When you think it over, you'll get what i mean so i dont have to sketch it out. its the same gut feeling you talk about: when my gut is in doubt i calculate ;)

I understand what you're saying. On my first drawnings (1st page of this topic) the main boom pivot was further out, but I changed that along the way because of digging depth and the stroke of main boom cylinder. This way I got the biggest loading height and digging depth. I believe that digging forces will be optimal at half stroke and boom reach where most of the work is done and as for the loading...it's a large cylinder, is must hold maximum bucket weight with no problem...

Take a closer look at latest Cat backhoes. The lower point of the boom has a simmilar position; not too far from the point of rotation

OK, i cant wait to see photos of the process of tacking the boom profiles together. :)

Me too. :) Right now al the material is on the cnc cutting machine. Hopefully it will be finished by the end of the week

:) I'm glad you guys like my project. I hope others will also decide to start their own projects. Some things can be made better when you do it yourself then if you buy it.
Since all the parts are getting pretty heavy, I had to make a little shop crane to be able to rotate and move them around... The crane is made out of scrap that I had lying around and it's not really finished yet. Also, I finished the kingpin, made a thread on one end of it and started welding the boom swing mechanism:

Wow, beefy. Great looking stuff. It will be cool to see it on the tractor.

Agreed!

I may have missed this, or read it and forgot, but do you have a rough idea of what the total weight will end up being?
