Great, so material thickness will be ok...as I expected.
These days I've been finishing design details for the boom and dipper...by now all the drawnings are done except for the thumb, but I'm working on it...:)

Nice work, it's turning out great! If you have not cut the side plates as shown in your drawing above, I would consider re-designing the large ones (at the bend of the boom, which has three lightening holes in it). If it were me, I would make the ends of these parts come to a point rather than the rounded shape you show. My reasoning is that the point allows you to weld more in a longitudinal direction along the beam. The rounded shape you show may entice you to weld across your most important structural component. Welding across is like putting a dotted line there that says "tear here".

That's not a bad idea, but it's too late for redesign since all the material is already delivered to the workshop and they are cutting it... I understand what you try to point out and hope it's not gonna tear :)

Commercial backhoes are often designed with metal doubled in high stress areas and attached by a full weld round the perimeter of the doubler piece. That's a nice way to deal with the problem of material thickness vs weight.

If you take sections of the boom profile, you'll find the most stressed section (in the transition area where the doubler plate ends) has the weld near the neutral axis of the profile, where tension is little. So no problem :)

Hi, not sure where you are at, but on the boom, it look like you did some fish mouth weld on the reinforcement tips plates, but not on the dipper.
They are diagonal, but still pretty straight. Might wanna trim them to add a curve to it. Will end up having a better spread of tension force created by welding.
