Deep cycle batteries are made for deeper discharge. Like trolling motors. Really high loads like large UPS (uninterruptible power supply) use big ( like residential square garbage containers 3 feet tall) glass batteries that fill a room. With hydrogen disappating exhaust fans. So deep discharge is better than regular. But cycli g full winch load more than a couple of minutes each time will lower its max output and then will fail sooner. How soon, I'd be guessing. But if there is a need, batteries are a replaceable item.

Robstaples and Quicksand you sirs are the hydraulic JJ of the battery world. I wish others could have explained it that well on previous threads about electric winches instead of it won't work and your wasting time. Now we have something to base it on. I think this info will make us wiser battery users and shoppers.

I'm assuming that the more you deplete a battery and the more often it's done, that is one thing that can ruin a battery.

That is true. It is particularly true if the battery is allowed to sit in a discharged state.

So let me throw this at you. Not knowing the specs of a deep cycle battery, does using one of these change run times or do they just have a longer life span when constantly depleting them.

Batteries have a life expectancy, measured in how many times they can be fully discharged and recharged. For batteries intended for starting engine, it is low, like under 10, those batteries aren't expected to be discharged in normal use. Deep cycle batteries can handle a few hundred discharge/charge cycles, although they still last longer if they are not discharged completely. In general, there is a tradeoff between CCA and cycles, so the same size battery in a deep-cycle configuration won't deliver as many CCA as a starting battery.

Remember what CCA means.. The amount of amps you can draw for 30 seconds at 0 degrees F. so that each cell does not fall below 1.2 volts. So in the case of a 6 cell 12 volt battery that is 7.2 volts. CCA as a measure of doing any usefull work with a winch does not even enter into a logical discussion. Forget the 850 CCA rating, it means NOTHING in this case. All it is good for is rating on how it would spin a starter for up to 30 seconds before the battery is dead. What is the amp hour rating of your battery? Most CUT tractor batteries are 75 to 80 amp hours. IF you are considering pulling 360 amps with a winch from your battery, you are talking about a few seconds use. And a 55 amp hour alternator is going to take a while to charge back up that battery.

Do you have any idea how many tractor sized batteries you would need to have 1100 Amp hours? Maybe a dozen.

Add an auxillary Yellowtop Optima battery to your winch bracket with a charging line coming to it from your regular battery. When winching keep the rpm up so your alternator is producing full current. If you find the winch is slowing down, you are working too fast.
