Hi there, it all depends on what you need for a rig. I have a 80hp 4wd Newholland with a loader, grapple bucket and a Farmi JL601 winch. I can cut and skidd out up to 40 trees per day (6 to 8 hrs) by myself with this rig. I have pulled pine trees that go 40" at the stump and close to 80ft in length. I have pulled hard maple trees with all the branches that go 30" at the stump. My rig is well balanced and also has a custom built forestry cab. 11000 lbs. weight. As long as you are properly trained the tractor and winch can make you some big money. You could by a JD540 or 640 skidder for about $20,000-but, if you have a breakdown-good luck! Also to consider is transporting your rig. you could drive up to 10 miles easily with a tractor. You can not do this with a skidder. Also, A tractor can be hauled fairly easy as where a skidder you are going to have to have a big rig haul it for you. We typically cut over 200 face cord of hardwood firewood over a period of 2 months during the winter. We sell most of it along with any hardwood logs we get from it. The 4wd tractor you are speaking of with a Farmi JL501 winch would be a great combination as long as it had a loader and rops. The rest of the time the tractor is used for our farming operations.
