Tractor making me sick?

Could just be that he was sick and now the cab has a virus or bacteria in it and that you catch it when you go in. I would dsinfect all surfaces you touch and air it out. Leaving it in the sun may help too (uv kills some viruses bacteria and mold).

I would wear a dust mask and gloves while cleaning and inspecting. Use rubber gloves and wash your clothes after the work is done.
Guys are right that molds are dangerous and the entire cab needs to be cleaned.

You could get a battery powered carbon monoxide detector and set it in the cab and let it idle closed up for awhile. Run the a/c or fan to circulate air in the cabin while running to see if the exhaust is seeping into the cab.

Not just mold....Here is what he should check right away....Remember the deaths of campers at Yellowstone Natl. Park this year...the tents they were staying in were found to be full of mouse droppings...and they breath the dust from the droppings in.....then on one episode of Ice Road Truckers....this one trucker, Rick....got very sick and went to a clinic and they diagnosed him with the same disease from mouse droppings....so he had his Semi Truck with sleeper..checked and sure enough it was contaminated with mouse droppings and he had to have a crew come in in Hazmat gear to clean the truck out....Apparently...these droppings can lead to a terrible disease...get to a Doc and have the Tractor cab checked thoroughly....Mice could have gotten up in there.

Sounds like carbon monoxide poisoning. Joint aches, flu symptoms. You get enough of it and it takes your body a while to get rid of it. Go to lowes and get a co2 detector. Put it in your cab and run it a while and see what happens. You have exhaust getting in somewhere. If you are worried about germs spray inside of cab with lysol and leave on surface for 10 mins wet. Will kill about anything.

Certainly sounds more likely than any respiratory problems like mold related issues or Hanta virus. Normally when they figure out that you have Hanta, the hearse is on the way.

The most plausible diagnosis is series coincidental

It's an enclosed cab....

Did you ever find anything wrong with your tractor?

just wondering if you got into some sort of chemical spill during bush hogging, and nothing was ever reported, or was reported, and you just do not know about. and chemical is all caught up in the cab and HVAC ducts.

hyd oil leaks, antrifreeze leaks, other fluid leaks into the cab, been there done that, i just do not remember side effects, before i realized what happened, and fixed situation.

mice and other varmints are a pain in rump that you never able to solve. they get into wide range of areas, and chew stuff up. and some birds do the same thing.

double check exhaust pipe, see if you can "turn" the pipe. so when driving into the wind and with the wind, the exhaust does not come back into air intakes. easier said than done. have had my fair share of exhaust *ughs* i have had to adjust the exhast pipes a few times over the years, bolt/nut came loose, or vibration helped turn it some, to just hitting something.

================
get some bungie cords, and strap the doors open, and open up the windows if you can, and see what happens. for a quick move of tractor.

================
the one things i do hat about tractor cabs, it is not always easy to clean them out, its not like a truck or car, were you can stand on ground and crawl down to the floor boards and around seats. and everything tends to be "molded" so you need to deal with clips and screws and other fasteners, to get into the niddy griddy of things.

with above said, just bleaching or using some sort of mist or cleaner down ducts may only be a temporary solution. and if mice droppings or molds are the problem, till you remove the physical source of mice droppings or like from system, you will be back at a science experiment, trying other solutions as molds and things grow back.

You know, i've been thinking about this thread for a while and noticed that, starting this past spring, my exhaust seemed to smell different. Kind of a noxious smell that I attributed to changes in fuel. I did feel a little queezy and noticed the same odd smell on several tractors and thought about starting a thread about it but never got around to it. Maybe I'm just smelling things or maybe it could be a factor?

Thanks guys. I'll check it out. yes it does have AC and cabin filters...and I did see a little mold on the roof. It also has some water stains on the fabric on the roof so I may have had a door not fully closed that allowed some water in. I hope this is the problem.

It's no fun to be scared to get in your tractor!

Did you ever figure this mystery out?

Would like to hear what is problem is. There is supose to be some new kind of spray for molds but I don't know what it is.

/ Tractor making me sick? #34
Weird, out of all the a/c systems i've seen that have had mold I've never seen one make someone sick, although im definatly sure it could happen. I'd be getting a CO tester and running the tractor around simulating some work, in that small of cab it wouldnt take a lot of CO to really screw with you. Seems like the easiest test.

/ Tractor making me sick? #35
Also make sure you are not recirculating cabin air. Most have this feature and warn about not doing it for very long.

About a month ago I have some bush hogging and run the machine a few days and...yup, get the worst case of the stomch bug ever...like for a week straight. I also have some other wierd symptoms like I have an ear infection, sulfer tasting burps and then my knee start to ache...

Never heard of CO poisoning affecting you with any of those symptoms. CO poisoning causes redden (flushed) complexion, head aches, dizzyness and death but non of these symptoms. Got to be some virus or chemical contamination. There are kits that have little filters that you collect air sample in and then send to a lab for analysis for molds. Might try that.

Gary, I sent the OP and email asking if he solved this mystery. It would be interested to find out the results..

Hey guys, the only thing I have done is spray the interior down with Lysol. Other then that I've been working 6+ days a week and really haven't had time to figure it out.

I'll keep you posted when I do.

weird..

I'd put a CO detector in there at least..

If it's CO2 there may be a problem with the engine.

"Is carbon monoxide a problem with diesel engines? Usually not, although any engine, including diesel, produces CO when combustion is incomplete. Diesel (compression ignition) engines run with an excess of air and often produce less than 1200 ppm CO. When diesel fuel is burned incompletely or when overloaded and over-fueled (rich mixture), diesel engines will produce high concentrations of CO. Diesels usually pollute the air with particulates and nitrogen oxides, not CO. "

Although I was in a 2008 International Prostar, and rolled out of the bunk in the middle of the night in Lake Station In.. I choked and gagged for over an hour before I could breathe 'semi-normal' again. Turned out to be a bad EGR valve on the truck.
