Tractor \"Play\" Time

OK, I'm not asking anyone to admit that every hour of seat time isn't productive and of the utmost importance, but...

Sometimes you just need to get away, air out your thoughts, escape, whatever, and how better than on your tractor.

So what tasks do your perform while "pretending" to work?

Personaly, I like to push the woods back into the woods. You know the growth on the edge of fields that try to take over. Brambles, russian olive, multflora rose, sumac, etc. Before I got a FEL I'd use a box blade, but the FEL with toothbar is just too much fun.

If in a bad mood there is always bury the groundhog hole, or bust the beaver dam. Not very productive, kinda spiteful, but better than kicking the cat.

So fess up! What's your favorite tractor playtime activity?

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

While not exactly play time because it is a necessary task, my favorite tractor activity is bush-hogging my food plots. I don't have a FEL or tiller yet, so I don't yet know how fun those are. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

I NEVER PLAY with my tractor , it is always SERIOUS WORK /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif BUT I do the same as you push back the woods from all my clear cuts, right now i am going to fill the FEL bucket with water and go water some trees i planted last week, easier than carring buckets. Got to go play ( i mean work ) now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

I rearrange the rocks in my creek.
After the winter or a good storm the banks and bed have been changed. Using the box blade and FEL, I re-build the banks and grade the bed (so we can run the ATV's through it, normally for a bath to the undercarriage).

Not a smooth ride as I get bounced everywhere but it's the closest thing I do that constitutes "play".

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

I'm not a tractor operator, I'm a certified pilot.

Once we get the 40D in the woods we take the grapple and start picking up downed trees and I pilot here, then I get one and pilot there, and pilot another over here, and here too......... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My wife does say I'm certifiable though.

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

Pine,
One of my friends used to unload cargo for US Air and when asked what he did for a living he would say he was a pilot for US Air. "I ask them where they want it and they say pilot here".

Edski, does the tractor have to be running? Sometimes when I want to get away and air out my thoughts I hop on the tractor and drive it out to the middle of my field, turn it off, slouch in the seat, put my feet up on the loader arms and just enjoy the day for a while. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Maybe now that the brush hog is on I'll actually do a little "work" on my way to and from. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bowhunter,
If it makes you think about hunting, you're no longer working.

frank_f15,
Point taken, I won't tell the wife. I like the water transport idea. On hot days Freds can sit in the bucket. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

bczoom,
If you're in water or mud (intentionally), it constitutes as play.

PineRidge,
You're a sick man, I think that's what I like about you.
Add 5 gallons of diesel...now that's a far.

Freds,

There are no rules. Feet up seat time sounds good to me!!!

I clear land, the destruction is refreshing /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I love the feeling of AWESOME power as you drive into a 7ft high wall of brambles and watch it spew out behind you as dust and logs, I have pics to verify the height of the brambles if anyone wants!

I also love driving out and watching the sun set over the hills, a beverage of choice helps too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

Please post pics, pics are always welcome.

I find great joy in just traveling. Taking the loop around the permiter to "check the fence".

I've been known to dig a hole just to fill it in. There is something about digging with the backhoe when there is no object that lets me collect my thoughts and decompress.

Mith-
Don't forget about your mowing deck experiment. You told us that you did that for fun also. How are things on that side of the pond? Give my regards to Magaret T!

YES, it is!!!
While I've no need to verify, I'd love to view the pics just the same.
Your sunsets occur before I have "status." Gee I love that term, thanks for introducing me to it. Because once one has status, the prohibitionists, AKA the Mrs, can't squawk too loudly.

I'd been away from the farm for ~ 20 months (business). Had two years worth of brambles (and other nuisances) to cut. They were head tall while on the tractor. While brush hogging I kicked up a FINE 8 pt buck, who ran about 20 yrds, then ducked under the brush, and then crawled on his belly that far again. I'd never seen this before! Didn't travel very far at all, just sneaky, watching me the whole time. What a treat.

Highbeam,
I'm with ya. I check on pastures that haven't been fenced in years. I take the slow cruise, almost at a walking pace. It's almost like watching a movie of my property. Way cool!

SCB,
You dawg, I know just what you mean.
I dream of being able to cycle every 15 seconds.
Plus, leaving shallow graves around the property tends to keep the Mrs. in line. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

"PLAY"..... I LOVE that word! It even sounds fun. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The closest building to my home is a Hooters Restaraunt. My #1 "tractor play time" is to hook up a manure spreader, and go driving down the lane, and pass the window so that all their customers can see me. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The look on their faces is priceless! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

I've gotta put mine on a trailer and drive 75 miles to play. I do have over a decade or two of brambles and deadfall to plow through, the previous owner never did anything, so I have a lot of therapy ahead of me.

Oh woo woo, some of us have it so rough.
Well if you can't pick up chicks on a JD w/ a manure spreader, I just don't know what this world is coming to.

Re: Tractor \"Play\" Time

RedRocker,
75 miles to play? Me thinks play started at mile 1.
Be careful with those brambles, if your thearpy is like mine...it'll involve donating a pint or two. Thank God for Carhartts.

And if my wife was to see a Hooters Girl on that tractor with me, well, I'd be living IN that manure spreader, post haste....

(But it doesn't cost ANYTHING to window shop!)
