has anyone ever seen a winch that you can make by mounting another rim to the back tire of the tractor, using the bh outrigger to lift the tire off the ground, and use the rim to spool in the winch line? seems simple.

thanks

You ain't a kid anymore are you Egon!! LOL
I'd love to get two hundred 20 something kids in a room and ask them to define "Capstan".

Some folks [many] might question that statement when actions come to mind.:D

Was a time all the service trucks in the oil field had one along with a Gin Pole. :D

I made one for my pto hookup out of a piece of 7" diameter round stock (or was it 6"). I used it briefly for raising and lowering a weight to drive well pipe into the ground for a rock well. You have to make sure the rope doesn't get caught up under itself when doing this...

As long as you let them keep their web enabled cell phones they should have no problem. I'm no 20 something, but I find myself looking up terms from this site often. Most of the time I get lost in Wikipedia-land clicking from linked reference to linked reference. I love that. I can waste more time on Wikipedia than most 14-year-olds with an X-box.

My neighbor had one on his new Deere tractor in 92 He had his first loader and was cleaning up a drainage terrace and had gotten stuck. He got another smaller rim somewhener and made a set of tabs that let him bolt it to the wheel weght mounts on his tractor. when hed get hung just get the rope out and hit the differential lock and keep tension on the rope. he saved his self many hours trouble with it.

I've never seen someone use a second rim for this purpose, altough it would move the winch further outside the tractor, but I have seen it done with a rope wrapped around the tire.

I did this last year to put my well pump in and pull it to lower it.

It is as simple as 4 threaded rods from one rim to the tractors holes for the wheel weights and tighten them up.

note on BX23 you have to keep the inside of tractor rim ends short.

That is a neat set up.

Thanks for sharing.

I should've know durn well I wouldn't be the first to come up with this idea. :D The power company just dropped 29 pines on a steep hillside (> 100% grade in places) under their lines on my land, and I'm trying to figure out how to get them down safely. The capstan winch was one thought. driving a pile to run the rope around so that I can just pull directly with the tractor (in another direction) is another good one I picked up from another thread (Go TBN!).

My problem with the captsan winch is I don't have a backhoe on my little tractor (see sig) and I don't think I can put one on that, and even if I could, DDW would probably have five kinds of conniption fits over the cost. ;) Without hydraulics in the back, it's either a PTO winch, a capstan winch (gotta figure out how to restrain the tractor with it's back wheels up in the air), or driving the pile. Basically, I have to drive at right angles to my pulling direction in order to land the logs where I want them.

My son wants to cut it where it lays and roll it down the hill, but I think that, while it might be fun, sooner or later a neighbor is going to end up with a log in their living room!

Great to be on here again.

Not to be picky but some of the posters should access there web phone and look up capstan.
A capstan is usually considered vertical, some times horizontal but many times the horizontal unit is called a windlass

It is drive for a rope or cable that is wrapped around the drive drum and is normally controlled by tightening the rope so it will grip the capstans drum, , the rope chain or cable is not stored on the drum, as it is on a winch.

but I have to agree the wheel winch and the use of the backhoe is a very clever idea

I started using it like a capstan but the rope twisted it over it self and got jammed so I had to let it wrap up.
I was pulling 430f of pipe and the pump by my self.
Then lowering it back down after adding another 20 ft of pipe because the well ran dry.

I suppose we could argue semantics all day but it is my understanding that the term capstan refers to the drum to which a rope or wire is wound regardless of whether it is used alone,in a winch, windlass or tape recorder.
