I am building a house on new land, and would like some input on tractor size. Will be mowing approx. 1-1/2 acres of yard, plus work 1/4 acre of garden. My WANTS are the JD 4110/4115 size, however when seeing these in person: I wonder if this size and price overkill for me? I feel like what I probably NEED is a sub-compact like JD 2210. My only issue is "enough power for molboard plow"?. Although I know tillers are wonderful for gardens, I grew up on a 130 acre farm and miss plowing. I was wandering if a sub-compact is capable of pulling say a 12" 1-bottom plow?
73,

Yes, it would be capable if you have plenty of rear ballast. I have pulled 1 bottom 12" garden tractor plows 8 inches deep with John Deere 400 and 430 garden tractors. I had 75% liquid fill in each rear tire and a starter weight plus 2 regular wheel weights on each rear tire.

The main concern you will have is sufficient underbelly clearance. This is the primary factor that limits how deep you can plow.

Hello and welcome to TBN!

We have similar size property. I went with the 4110 mostly for the clearance under the tractor. The 411x is impressive the first time you see it in person (compared to smaller and similar tractor size of course /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ), but I can assure you that you will get use to it's size quickly. So no I don't think the 411x size is overkill for you! The other question is harder to answer... I guess it depends on the buget you are allowing for this purchase.

Thanks for your input. I really think personally I'll be happier in the long run with a 4110/4115. The 4110 would definitely be enough tractor, but I keep the 4115 as a choice because it doesn't appear to be much larger in size at all...yet has more engine, more HP, and more torque.
I think the 4115 is a bit longer, but not much. It has some nice additions for the extra money including more Hydaulic oomph and an imporved injection technology on the engine plus some more HP. I haven't missed the HP, but I'm not plowing anything either.

I pulled two 16" disc hillers at 45 degree opposed angles to make raised rows for my garden. I think the 4010 would pull them set up at dual disc plows. Read above how other folks have used small tractors to pull plows. Think my 4010 would need some wheel weight to help hold it in place. It's the same weight as the 4110 and a little less weight than the 4115.

Here's a pic.

73jeep,

I went through the same process as did you. I am going on record as saying NOT to get the 4115. To me, they are overpriced for the features you would be getting. I looked at the 2210 and decided it was too small for my needs, so I looked at the 4010 and decided I wanted more HP, so I looked at the 4110 and liked it. Then I said, maybe I want the direct injection tractor, so I looked at the 4115. It came in close in price to the 4210 and 4310 so I ended up getting a 4310, which is three times the machine for not a lot extra money. Now that the 4010's are no longer being made, you may wish to look at the 3120. It would not be too much more than the 4115 and has features galore. If you feel that is too big, backstep to the 4110. It is a great little tractor and would save you some money. The difference between the indirect injection on it and the DI on the 4115 does NOT merit the extra cost of the 4115. Also, the attachment use and capabilty are the same.

I spent a fair bit of time choosing between the 4110 and 4115 - in the end I ordered the 4115. Over the weekend I kept looking at the facts and figures and was concerned about the turning radius of the 4115, which I think was a fair bit more than the 4110 - I think it was similar to the 4310/4410 chassis size. On the Monday I changed my order up to a 4410 - but I have a whole 7 acres to worry about!! For what it's worth I am very pleased I bought more than I need, although I am sure the 4110/4115 tractors are great machines

Cheers Mike
