Tractor is new and the engine is stalling out if the brake is applied while tractor is in gear. Is this normal behavior? I wouldn’t expect it is but not seeing much in the manual about it. Sorry for the noob question, thanks in advance.

By in gear I mean not in neutral and in either Low or High range. Sorry should have been more clear.

Is the pedal not returning to neutral when you take your ft off it ?

Are you jamming on the brake while still standing on the HST pedal? I rarely use the brake just use the HST to slow or stop, brake only when holding position on steep hill or inching nose down into really steep place.
My little BX used to almost throw you onto the hood if you let of the HST pedal to fast.

Sorry for misunderstanding. Being a guy with a stick, lol, I have no experience with HST, but to me it does not sound normal.

I was applying the brake while sitting still. No other pedals pressed. Engine was at lowest throttle level, HST in low gear. I applied the brake pedal and it pretty quickly stalled.

Does it creep in one direction or the other by itself?
I would be suspicious of maybe the seat switch or HST neutral switch

Sounds like HST pedal adjustment or stuck pedal.
If it starts in the "neutral" position it probably does not go all the way back after being pressed/driven.

Applying the brake and trying to go with the engine idling I'd expect it to stall.

(y) The HST isn't like a car with automatic tranny.

HST tractors etc need to run at or just under the “540” pto rpm when doing anything other than parked at idle, which is likely around the 2000-2400 engine rpm. Read the manual. Driving/working at idle speed is not good for the HST pump. Idle speed is for idling.
Another thought is maybe the seat safety switch is activated when the operator applies the brakes….his weight lifts off the seat?
