Occasionally, I'll go after a deadfall.

But usually, I get an 8 cord load of tree length delivered

Then I browbeat my daughter and grandkids into helping me split it.

And my Brother-in-Law and I stack a year's supply undercover.

But I try to stay a year ahead so as to have plenty of seasoned wood.

And I'm enjoying it right now! :dance1: :thumbsup: :laughing:

I'm curious about the small tractor in the first photo. I saw it once at a farm show and wondered what it was designed for. Could it be solely for moving things around the farm?

It's a vineyard tractor. Deere rebaged them from a European company. The model that deere had was air cooled diesel with articulated steering.

This is a Gif shot from 1990 the log is 20 inch 50 cm x 20 inch 50 cm
we made this hydraulic firewood machine of old waste materials
it was the first of its kind with twin or tandem cylinders
normally it is run with the lowest cylinder 5 t. 250 bar
3 sec. forward 1 sec. return
with 2 cylinders it makes 10 t. and runs little slower
the 12 mm thin knife is made of Swedish hardex 400 steel and it has the strength of 30 mm ordinary steel
the cylinders and pistons are all made of plast not stainless steel
and it is driven with ordinary water (water hydraulics)
it has served us fore more than 20 years and is still going strong
and guess what the hydraulic pump is ?

You've a hose from the house tap and an inline water-pump perhaps?
Air compressor?



Must be massive amounts of force on the wedge welding given how high it is, even if the wedge is tilted forward (and thinner), limiting the resistance. I do like the concept of wedges being knives rather than relying solely upon brute force, provided you've got a long enough knife to not have to worry about pulling the wood pieces apart, and the thin knife is strong enough to take any twisting loads.

Do you still have the machine? How many cubic metres of wood did it split and what failed, if anything, on it first?

This is a really clever idea. Love it.
