I made my own cross wedge. It only has the power to 4-way 8-10". TSC sells a 4-way that would work.
That's cool. I really need to get a 80-100 amp service in my barn i want to he able to do more serious fab work.

Keep in mind, those "light duty" 4-ways are for soft wood only. I've heard of several complaints of guys bending them up pretty bad, trying to split hardwood, and/or tougher crotches...

SR

I had no idea they were such light duty. I never really looked into them before.
I dont split any soft wood that goes straight into the burn pile since i sell firewood. I suppose if i had an outdoor wood burner i might consider it

What is the larger black plastic bin with the lid in the last photo?
Do you use that with your forks for hauling split wood?

Where can I find one of these?

Thanks

I received this one for free. I also found a guy that was giving away about 100 of them and I got a couple more. I was thinking about storing my wood in them because of their lids etc. The problem with the 100 is that they were pretty well beat upon and plus the guy did not want you to pick through them to find the best. In addition he was in a hurry to get rid of them. Then I thought if I ever move I have to find a place to get rid of them as well. So that is why I only ended up with a few of them.

You can buy them new at a place like Global Industrial and the pallet containers are made by Buckhorn and others.

This is a good example of why I think the bucket/forks are way to far out front of the front axle on modern 4x4 tractors, it does give more lift height, and with short wheel base, a tractor can turn in a small area, but for what I do I'd rather have the front axle closer to the bucket.
I don't have a quick disconnect bucket on my L3400, so I have to clamp on my forks on the bucket which makes it stick out farther from the front axle and for me I think that cuts down on lifting power and make my rear tires come off the ground easier.

I agree completely about the length of loaders these days. I couldn't get a 553, so rather than getting the H240 (which is easily 2' longer  ) I went down to the 512 instead. It theoretically cost me 600# of lift capacity and about a foot of height, but the total package is shorter yet than the 553 was. They're not a supported configuration from Deere, so there's only a handful of 5e 4wd's running the 512 loader, but I'm pretty sure it's because there might not be enough clearance at the suspension stops with the tires all the way in. Since my tires will be almost all the way out to stay just inside my 73" bucket, there's no issues.

I also wanted to comment about your short forks. That's a sweet little work around you did there.

Lot of numbers there, took me a few to add it all up,= JD, I think you made the right tractor/FEL combo choice, 2 ft. sounds a lot to me. Most people are probably like me when thinking about buying a tractor, look at everything else, $$, motor size, tire size, HST, gear, lift #, and most importantly, coffee cup holders. But If I could buy another tractor, the first thing I'd look at now with tape, is how far the bucket is in front of the front axle with quick disconnect, along with bigger tires on the front.

The forks you see on the video are for moving logs, I have 2 pallet forks, 4 mid 2' long forks for brush. I would someday like to have a hydraulic clamp thing on my bucket, but for now what I have works ok-ish.

<--- Says JD in my info. ;)

They went for added reach and added height for loading over the side of a dump truck. The two aspects combine to stick the bucket that much further forward when it's on the ground. You can also see the rear link pins are forward of the stack on the h240, while they're aft on the 512.

This pic might make it look worse than it is because the bucket's a bit higher than the one with the 512, but it's still a lot of daylight between the bucket and brush guard.

My loader should be here in the next couple days. I hope to be posting some pics by next week. :D
