We can more easily wrestle 24” diameter x 22” long rounds into the vertical splitter mode. Split pieces stacked in grapple to take to wood shed. The trees were blown downed a year ago before getting to them. Bark was getting rotten. With the vertical splitter we can easily pop the bark layer off. Makes for much cleaner, higher btu firewood. Same action I use to use with axe and maul.

I split for a Buck 91 catalytic wood stove. 30 years old. Very efficient wood stove but small firebox requires more precision splitting for full charge. Can last 24 hours per charge. The vertical splitter helps split blocks to size while sitting on a round. Much of this wood seasons for two or more years before using.

Tuesday I cut some firewood and left it lay. Yesterday morning was cold for a while so I was able to get a couple sticks on frozen ground. This birch had started to blow over but got hung up in a beech tree. I bored it then wedged it up solid before I cut it off and pulled it off the stump with the winch. I cut it high to be in better wood and I cut it perpendicular because I didn't want it to move, drop down or shoot back.

One is that birch and the other is hop hornbeam locally know as iron wood.

Bucked and added them to the pile. I'm a little behind. It has been an on again off again firewood season here weather-wise.

While your pile grows, mine is shrinking as i finish blocking up this years supply.
You have some decent sized hornbeam; what I have is 6 inches or less. Great firewood.

I'm a year ahead in the shed already and the stuff I am pulling out now will be for the year after that. I have learned the hard way that you can't be to far ahead if you want to work up and burn your own wood. You never know what will happen.

By the way - a while back we were talking about leaving the hitch on the cable as I do vs transferring to to the slotted bar. One thing I didn't mention is that I run a 1/2" cable. It can take a lot more abuse and may be less apt to jam and kink (???) than the 5/16" or 3/8" cables you see on many winches.
