When dragging trees with a chain hitched to your drawbar, is it preferrable to have a trailer hitch ball bolted to the drawbear in which to wrap the chain around to avoid the chain sliding back and forth?

yes id put a knob on the drawbar,an then like you say you could wrapp the chain around it.

I use a clevis.

X2

A clevis is the best option and also probably the safest. Depending on the size of your tractor, a hitch ball can actually shear off at the base if pulled on too hard (especially if you ever have to yank on something.)

When I do that, I use a shackle, at least thats what we call them in the Rigging trade up here, clevis=shackle, same, same.

x3 or is it x4 now:thumbsup:

I dont use the ball becasue I have a couple that have been ruined by doing this. The chain mars up and chips the chrome plating.

I prefer the clevis/shackle, but you could use the time honored trailer ball, just know you will booger it up, possibly over stress it. I wouldn't use that ball on a decent trailer coupler.

In a bind, those trusty old balls have come to the aid of many a stuck vehicle.

I wouldn't recommend pulling from the "drawbar" ( I assume you're calling the 2 foot long steel bar that goes in the 3 point lift arm ends a drawbar?) at all, if you have the option of using what Kubota calls a "drawbar" mounted solidly under the tractor.

I grew up calling the 2 foot long bar a "drawbar", just like everybody else in the civilized world. I've since been edumacated as to think that I should be pulling from the Kubota version of the drawbar whenever possible. Less chance of a flip-over and a solid mounting. We just loop a chain over the ball I have mounted on it and pull from there. It's not good for the ball, I may end up welding a T on the end of it and using an anchor shackle on one leg of the T and a ball on the other for pulling a trailer around.

I think most folks referring to the draw bar were writing about the bar underneath the rear axle...not the 3PH type.
