Trailer rebuild- a summer I will never get back.

Yep, and a pattern

I look at it as I did a job and learned something when I do something like that. Most things could be bought new cheaper these days unless you have nothing else to do.

But now you've got the memories and the trailer. Congrats on your successful project!

Then after about a week I thought, suck to have a trailer I don't trust to put my tractor on. I also hate junk, so began the end of my free time this summer. I started tearing it down to pieces, literally and rebuilt it from scratch. The only thing that stayed in tact was the front, but it got heavy modifications. As you can see I basically started from scratch. I pieced in a new side rails to where the bend started then also "sistered" another 3x5x.25 inch angle over top of where the axles are and over the weld joint to add strength. The pictures on the right are during during dissemble and the two on the left are the rebuild.

in the third picture, I noticed you shackles: 1 flipped up and 1 flipped down. I recently rebuilt all the suspension under my 2 axle trailer. Ever since I did, the shackles kept flipping to 1 up and 1 down. I most recently flipped them both to the up position and the trailer rides very low but seems to handle fine. My question is: should the shackles be up or down or what?

Good eye, I missed that. They should both go up from the central equalizer to the springs.

Great job on your rebuild! For the $450 you paid for that, I'd have likely just used it as it was by my standards.

The last trailer I had was a 6x12 tandem landscape. I paid $565 for it, put new lights on it for $50, a new floor with salvaged lumber (free) and welded in a new rear cross member (also free) Used it for 2 yrs then sold it for $500 with 4 bald tires (2 barely held air) and the frame so rusty it was probably held together with paint and non-functioning brakes. Probably one of my best spending of $115. I added up to $1500 to rebuild (by that I mean replace everything but the rims).

Up here, used trailer prices are crazy. It's so bad that you often can't tell if it's used or new by price and details alone without a year or pics.

I think I'll start from scratch for my next one unless I find another similar deal.

Yep I figured out the shackle thing the other day. When I bought the trailer they were flipped but they are correct now. Found the easiest way to flip them was a little trial and error of driving either the front or the back tires up on blocks so the other axle was off the ground causing gravity to correct it.

Looks too nice to use..... I like the attention to detail with the little things like the lanyards securing all your pins to the trailer. I do the same on mine.
