Here is Hoye's diagram.

The outer surface of the 'strainer' (Yanmar's name for it) faces the transmission sump. Then on the forward 1/4 of the filter assembly, there is a shoulder and an O-ring that separate the sump from a little cavity at the front of the transmission where the pump intake line is attached. The large holes in the filter assembly forward of that O-ring let fluid pass from the clean inner side of the filter over into to the pump pickup cavity.

I get it now. Thank you...I wonder how long this thing has been torn up.

I discovered a previous owner used the wrong O-ring and this had cemented that filter solid into the transmission. I destroyed the filter tuggin it out all bent. (Photo).

That was back in 2003. After I sorted out the 'deferred maintenance' issues it has been trouble free ever since. Your result should be the same.

I suggest flush the transmission sump with diesel and scrub it with a toothbrush on a stick or something then mop it dry while you wait for the new filter. Then the new filter should be good for years.

Do I need to take off the top cover to get in the tranny or scrub it through the 3-bolt access panel?

I just poured diesel in the fill plug assuming that any sediment would be in the bottom inch and would be flushed out by this.

You can reach in pretty far via that bottom hole, clear to the back of where the strainer rests. I think I used a round slender parts brush, or maybe an old baby-bottle brush. A rifle bore cleaning brush would work too. This is to dislodge any sludge so that diesel can flush it out. Then test cleanliness with a rag wrapped around a stick.

(Note my edit to my post of a few minutes ago - photo added).

it probably got ripped up with the gungy fluid trying to be dragged through it. that old oil has lots of water in it and has for a long time. even after a diesel wash i would run fluid for about 20 hours then replace it whilst hot just to be sure as you may find one day it has done some damage.

I was referring to the hydraulic filter. My 186D has one.....maybe your model doesn't??? As for the screen......I wouldn't run without it either. As long as you're ordering parts.....might as well change all the fluids and filters.....seems like the previous owner may not have kept up on maintenance. At least you'll know what's in there!

I had a feeling that is what this one looked like at one time. This would be a typical On The Cheap VN. Repair to me and it was complete with Forma Gasket instead of a O-Ring also. I decided best just to replace it.

Replace what filter? This isnt motor oil by the way, this is tranny/hydraulic fluid tank.

He has one of the newer powershift models, they have a spin on hyd. filter like more modern tractors do.

If you rin it without the screen it wont be any worse than that one prolly, but it will suck pieces of metal and circulate anything that may be there through your pump, which can cause extra wear and also stick your 3pt valve open. Id wait and get one from Hoye with the gague or sensor that you needed. If you fill it and run it with the old one you will ahve to drain the whole thing again to put the new one in, if you catch it in a clean bucket no big deal but i would not use your normal drain pan.

I got a 5 gallon bucket of "Traveller Premium Universal Tractor Transmission/Hydraulic Fluid" with the tractor. Is this fluid compatable with the recommended JD303 fluid? I cannot see the viscosity level on the label.
