You obviously don't buy diesel fuel, large vehicle insurance, local/state and federal permits! Fill out a log book, are told when you can drive, must stop to get weighed, prohibited to use certain roads!

Actually, yes, yes ( depends on your definition of large), no and no.

I don't haul as a job. Just an occasional help out a friend haul, a couple of miles usually or just for myself.

I thought $2 was good, but after reading about those that are self employed doing it, I understand the $4 or $5 a mile due to insurance costs and the above mention of permits. I also realize that there isn't a lot of profit even at that rate.

A few months ago I had a 1949 John Deere B tractor hauled 400 miles on a gooseneck. Cost me $350. Price was low because the tractor (which weighs about 4300 lb) could be driven onto the trailer (so no problem loading/unloading) and the hauler was deadheading home until I found him and gave him the load.
