The fuel alone would equal the rental of a local machine and operator.

Not really, if you Figure you only have about a days worth of work to do then maybe.
I have a lot of work to do up there and couldn't possibly rent a machine for cheaper than a 400-500 dollars for what I need to do.

I do love renting though, I used to be against it but now I see how much more economical it can be for those times when you use a piece of equipment once or twice. There are times where it costs a lot less to rent but there are also times it isn't.

I agree with you 100%, just thought we would throw the idea out there. Only you know your circumstance.

Just to give you a idea, my neighbor has 2 dump trucks. I drive them fairly often, 7-8 times a year. One is a Ford F-800 and the other is a GMC C-6

The Ford gets about 6mpg empty and 4-5 loaded to 26,000#. The GM gets 5mpg and 3-4 loaded to 22,000# or so.

So one round trip at 240 miles and 5 mpg would take about 50 gallons of fuel @ $4 per gallon or $200 in fuel alone.

The idea of me making a trip 4 times a year or so with it is sounding worse and worse as the time goes on :D

I know it's certainly expensive to run equipment these days, just on fuel cost alone, not even figuring in maintenance costs like wear and tear on the equipment being used.
I'll be perfectly happy if I can find someone to take it the one way trip for under $500, I think it will be well worth that.

If you can not find one to rent or someone to do it reasonably just plan all the work for one long trip. I know this may be tough but it really is not practical to move it back and forth each time.
