I bought 288 gallon propane tank (96" long x 30" dia.) that is about 80% full. I am going to transport to my ranch a distance of about 150 miles including some state highways. Does anyone have any information as to the legality of this, particularly in California. It is a private non-commercial situation. I will be transporting it on my 7,000# equipment trailer and plan to cover it to minimize the visual.

Me personally would load'r up and Git-R-Done. Yes it is probably against the law but I am the type that will deal with that when the time comes. If the worst thing I ever do is transport propane I guess I am going to ****.

I got ahold of a commercial officer at CHP and he told me I need a Hazmat permit to move it. A couple of sheets of plywood and a tarp should be a great substitute for a trip through the Mojave Desert. I've never seen a cop out there, but with my luck...

I called on my encrypted CIA cell phone using a random number from Idaho.

Cripes - hope it wasn't yours!

I might ask my propane dealer what they would charge to go get it for me. It might be a lot of money but something tells me that the fine for transporting hazardous material without a permit or the proper stickers or the proper safety devices or the correct license might be pretty stiff and involve some time in the states nice hotel facilities with the 24 hour a day security guards

My dealer has a pump on his delivery truck which can pump either direction, i.e. he can empty my tank into his truck.

You might want to check if someone could empty the tank for you in its current location & give you a credit for the propane they take out.

I am certain you would never get full retail price, but losing $50-100 is nothing compared to the cost of the ticket you could get.

This deal is DEAD. The risk is too high. The local supplier in the area (only one) will not pump down the tank.

Thanks for your answers.

Now why would you ever say a thing like that?

I would assume it dosent have a wet line on tank if it did you could gravity fill 100lb or a lot of 20 lb tanks to empty it.

If you want the tank and are not woried about propane just burn it off
They couldent get the last 5000 lbs out of our huge tanks at work and burned it off to empty for plumbing changes that had to be done

Why would you ask a question about doing something dangerous and then ask why I'd say that? Obviously transporting a nearly full tank is unsafe. Not just for you but others on the road. If you were to be in an accident and the tank bleve'd the damage would be catastrophic. Propane stays low so in the desert sun the tank would be relieving pressure and could easily find and ignition source causing a disaster. It's wise that you considered the risk too high but it was foolish to even consider in the first place.

I wouldn't worry about it, as someone says, throw a tarp over it, I'm sure your going to get stopped and searched every ten miles or so! The propane company who moved my 500 gallon tank well over half full didn't empty it, they just loaded it on their special trailer and hauled it to my location. According to law, they were supposed to empty it. They had a bigger liability than you and they didn't worry!

GET R Done!
