Transpotation Chain-Domestic or Import?

One poster on TBN citing a DOT guideline & posted that when binding seperately from all four corners-you have to de-rate the chain strength by 1/2. If you tie through the tractor side to side with one chain, then you can figure full rated strength on the chain.

This does not make sense. Whether you run 4 chains or two the physics should be very similar. If anything I would think the four shorter chains would have better angles and take less load.

Go to truckntow.com. I bought all my stuff here for my DK45. American made G70 chain and HD Durabilt ratcheting chain binders. Great service and fair prices. Got Vulcan pro-grade straps for all the stuff not needing chains.

It is confusing to me too.

IIRC, California requires 4 tiedowns once you hit a certain weight (10k#?) and they have to be into 4 SEPARATE tiedown points. 2 separate chains running into a single clevis on the drawbar is not allowed.

Does the size of the individual links vary from brand to brand or import vs domestic? I seem to remember when looking at Grade 70 chains I found some of the cheaper ones to have larger (and therfore fewer) links in the same 20ft length.

Is one better than the other? I guess the chain with smaller links would weigh more?

any grade 70 you buy, when used properly, is going to hold your 5000 pound tractor to the trailer. you could use straps, you are so light. not really heavy hauling here..........

One on-line trasportation rigging site sells what they call "Short Link" chain. They also sell standard link chain.

It has got to be Import at this price(see below)

From Site:" All of our ASTM80 grade 70 short link chains have the same minimum breaking strength as NACM96 grade 70 transport chain, only their chain link are shorter than NACM96 chains, therefore these short link chains are used in some applications which need the chains to be more flexible."

BTW-Assuming this is import-and you are OK with that-the price is very attractive. 3/8" X 20 foot Grade 70 Short link Transportation chain
with Grade 70 Grab Hooks- $41.95 and free shipping.

and

Grade 70 3/8'' x 20' NACM96 Binder Transport Chain w/ Clevis Hook Each End Working Load Limit: 6600 lb. Breaking Strength: 26,400 lb. Gold Finished... $41.95 delivered.

I found the reference for the TBN poster "Broken Knee".
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/trailers-transportation/172501-binder-chains.html Look at post #7..

He seems to know what he is talking about and..I too...wonder if the de-rating is really demanded by the state or fed regs. If I use 3/8" Grade 70 chain and binder I'm still in the green.

I find it interesting too that 5/16" Grade 70 Transport chain has a working load limit greater than 5/16" Grade 80 chain. When you get to 3/8" and higher sized chain-the Grade 80 is rated higher. Strange..

Obviously, you need to check with all your local laws, but here in northern Minnesota, I've talked to my local sheriff regarding tie-downs, and he said all the Sheriff's dept. used for smaller implements were the 10,000 lbs tie-down straps, as they were smaller, lighter, and met their requirements. So I bought a couple of 10,000 lbs straps and have used them for all my hauling needs.

Worth a look?
