They were dumped in a state forest area. No homes near by. I live on a large lake, much of it as state forest. I'm sure an endless supply of raccoons to take the place of any I kill/trap and relocate. If I start killing them, I'd have to drive them off in to the forest land any way to dispose of them. My jack Russell would dig them up here.

Indiana law says you can trap them if they are causing damage to your property. You have to either humanely euthanize them or release them in the same county in which you trap them. You also must have permission of the land owner to release them on their land. Not sure of the legality of release them into a state park.

DNR: Raccoon

They carry disease that is lethal to horses so if we see them around we trap and euthanize..... lead poisoning is the method we use.

We had a problem for a while (on about 200 acres). Mostly with the bird feeders. I killed a few, and evidently word got around the family, and they have moved on. I have zero illusion that I could ever wipe them out.

Now, on the other hand, the dogs and PLENTIFUL coyotes may have severely reduced their numbers.

Over crowding of where ever you do dump them, means they move on, and when they do, they become some one else's problem!

All Gods critters got a place in the choir except coons. I too have trapped, marked with surveyors paint and had them return. Not to many raccoons with an orange racing stripe around.
Raccoons Cary all sorts of nasty stuff and multiply like rats. My best year in the eradicati9n process was 2016 with a grand total of 50. Needless to say, we have a bumper crop of Vulchers who keep sacrificial bone yard tideyed up.
Last season, our raccoon encounters totaled less than 10 so it appears we’re making a dent.

I have them, too. Nothing easy seems to work.

Just an item of interest, in my research, I found that in some places there is a distance limit to transporting a trapped animal.

From:
Facts | San Diego Humane Animal Removal

...if you trap an animal you either have to release it within 100 feet of where you caught it or kill the animal.

I've kinda got a hard line attitude about this. If you don't want the animal bothering you man up and kill it. And don't be a wussy and drown it. Kill it. If you can't find your big boy panties have your wife do it. Jeez...... Just because you don't like a wild animal doing what it naturally does, that doesn't give you the right to torture it. Man up. Kill it swiftly and as painlessly as possible. Otherwise leave it alone.

Sorry I ranted on your post Bruce. Wasn't pointed at you.

Any other tricks to keep raccoons out?

Forget it, they are unstoppable! I have a .22 strategy and so far none of them have come back! FYI be very careful handling raccoons, they are known carriers of Rabies!

I believe they have similar habits to our possums, we mix napthalene flakes with petroleum jelly and smear it on fence tops where they walk, they cannot stand the napthalene and the jelly makes it a bit rain resistant.

I caught one and didn't want to. This is a food bin that I had a bungey cord on and a bolt thru the lock. And he still got in but couldn't get out!...
