Treadmills

Bird,
I bought a Nordic Trac model several years ago. I don't know if they even make them now, but it was a good one. It lasted seven or eight years of fairly regular use, mostly by my wife. A circuit board of some sort went bottoms up in it about two years ago. I can order the part on line for about $150, but I haven't repaired it yet. It was about a $400 model that I think I bought from Sears. We had planned to sell this house last year and moved the Treadmill to my barn the next county over to make the house more presentable. Now that we've decided to stay here, I guess I'll fix it. I personally like treadmills because here its just too hot most of the time to get out in the evenings and the mosquitoes are rough. I have a Nordic Trac Ski machine that I liked, but a bad back stopped me from using it. For some reason it really aggravated the muscles in my lower back. I was in the 159th session of the FBI NA. I enjoyed the board room a lot more than the gym.

Bird,

When my wife was diagnosed with COPD her pulmonologist recommended she go to pulmonary rehabilitation. They let spouses exercise too for a fee of $17/month. They have treadmills, different types of bikes, arm mills, weights, etc. Normally we go in twice a week. I started the program too almost a year ago. I stopped jogging when we moved to the country 15 years - - I figured I was getting plenty of exercise just keeping this place up, but I can tell that my wind and endurance are much improved. And, the program has done wonders for my wife. Smoking 45+ years didn稚 help her at all & she値l never 喪ecover? but she痴 much more capable now than before she started.

Have you checked into your local YMCA? I have not looked into it myself, but I知 told they have a program that allows senior citizens to exercise for no charge.

Ditto on the Nordic Track, ours likely has 10,000 miles on it and still going strong. I paid about $700 for it new in 2001 with all the programmable features which I really like.

So I can't decide whether to buy new or used, nor which brand and/or model.

What do you recommend?

Bird,
Around here there are a few used exercise equipment stores. You can try out the different models there, if you have one near you. :)

Andy, we have had this conversation before, but wlihile I still can't believe all of the similarities in our lives. We also had a Pro-Form treadmill that we had gotten at Sears. Ours was probably about 6 years old. I used it once in awhile, but Monica used it a lot. Ours was also destroyed in our house fire. The one thing I didn't like about it was the belt length. I'm short and don't have real long legs, but if I tried to speed it up to much I could feel why feet hitting the back of the belt. I was always afraid I was going to go off the back.:p

I don't know, but it has been pretty scary. Almost feel like we could switch lives and we wouldn't know the difference.

I was in the 159th session of the FBI NA. I enjoyed the board room a lot more than the gym.

I liked the board room best myself, Logan. Would you believe I've forgotten the number of the session I attended, and when we were burning a bunch of old records and stuff before we moved back to town, one box with all the certificates, commendations, and such accidentally went into the fire. But I went the end of March to mid-June, 1986.

Hakim, you're right about a bunch of treadmills on craigslist in this area, but I had no idea which one(s) (brand, model, etc.) would be worth what the sellers are asking. But with the help I'm getting here, I'll learn.:) In looking at new stuff on the Internet, I'm finding that the bigger, heavier, and presumably better quality treadmills also have a lot of features for which I have no use; things such as TV, music, fans, etc. The cheap ones have all the "features" I think I'd want, but don't have the longer and wider tracks and I'm afraid of their quality and durability

MossRoad, I don't know of any used exercise equipment stores in the area, but now that you mention it, there's almost bound to be. I'll be looking to see if I can find any.

I still don't know what I'm going to do, but whatever it is will be on or after the end of this month, since we'll soon be going on a little trip for a family reunion.

Bird, if it wasn't 500 miles to your place, I have one I'd gladly give you. I suggest you buy a cheap one off of craig'slist and see if it's something that you will do on a regular basis. Then buy a better one if you want. Most of these used ones are like new, many buy them and never use them. At the mall in Topeka, they let senior folks use the air conditioned and heated space for walking, probably several miles of space by the time you make the rounds and there are stairs if you want that type of exersize. It would cost the fuel to get back and forth to the mall but might be an option.;)

Are you out of your mind, How dare you make a judgment about any member like that based on a picture. How could that be anything but insulting & certainly uncalled for. Why did bother saying anything at all if that was all you had to say

:D :D Well, I said I was overweight, so you're right there. And I'll even agree that I'm lazy and spend too much time on the computer. But I never heard of anyone with the ability to tell by a person's picture that the person was lazy.:D :D And I've been accused of a lot of things, but a lack of discipline has never been one of them.:D

Let's see . . . so far this morning, I've mowed, edged, and trimmed the yard. Then did a little tree pruning and tied a couple of bundles of brush for the garbage men to pick up. Then I hand watered a few tight areas and now came in to cool off after I got the sprinklers going front and back.

And I found it's 2,000 ft. to walk around the block where I live (long block), slightly uphill the first 500'. And I only walked around it 4 times recently, but gosh, that's boring, and besides that, it's HOT!:D

Man, I about choked on an ice cube laughing at that exchange! :D Bird, you did more this morning that I had planned to do all weekend. :)

Shrimp post your picture. Then tell us what you have accomplished in your life so we can judge you. I know from just one post that Bird made what kind of man he is. I know a lot of healthy, active people not worth their salt. Personally I'd rather be around fat, happy people than skinny judgmental ones.

the key is to get to your target heart rate...

220 minus age multiplied by , say, 70 percent to begin, for 30 minutes at 3 times/week, then build on that

Tool: Target heart rate calculator - MayoClinic.com

google the 'target heart rate' and you will get good explanations

also, be wise to see your doc for a good check-up, including a stress test/dye test of the heart before beginning exercise

hope this helps

First off, I always thought Bird just looked...well.....you know....pretty much like most people I know. I am really curious though....how does a person "appear" lazy in a picture? Does standing upright while your picture is taken make one "appear" lazy? I guess maybe I could understand it if the picture showed 9 guys working really hard at something while a tenth buy was sitting down watching, but Bird's picture? Nope, nope....don't understand it.

I appreciate it, Shimp, but I actually do know about all that stuff. It doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to do it all. There are a couple of little health issues involved, but I don't take them too seriously.;) And while you generally need to get your heart beating faster, my wife is the world's slowest walker; no way you're going to get her to walk fast, or even what I'd consider a moderate walking speed. But starting early this summer, she's started walking down the street aways and back, less than a thousand feet, but she does it 3 to 5 times a day in spite of the heat, frequently pausing to visit with neighbors, carrying a walking cane for protection in the event one of the big dogs in the neighborhood gets out and gets after her, and about half the time she has her Chihuahua along on a leash. Not at all an aerobic workout . . . but she's been losing weight. Incidentally, I tried walking fast around the block with the Chihuahua (who is also a bit overweight) and darned if she didn't keep up with me.

And of course I know why my weight has gone up. After smoking for 46 years, I just quit 2 years ago, so snacking has been a bad habit. My wife also smoked for about 48 years and only quit one year ago, but while she does some snacking, she doesn't eat as much as I do and she chews gum a lot.:D

I just couldn't help but get a good laugh at your earlier post about me "appearing" lazy, because I kept thinking of all the years I spent interviewing and hiring or rejecting job applicants and thinking how great if would have been if I could have told whether they were lazy or not just by their appearance.

Bird,

You handled Shimp better than I ever would have. Why is it when I read your posts it is with Jim Scoutens voice? Back to treadmills now, My wife and I have some home gym equipment and gym memberships neither get used as they should. If the weather is nice I want to be outside, poor weather I'm not much in the mood to be at home so the gym works. Bottom line our home equipment is in my way all of the time and unused. Thats just my own findings. Good luck.

Bird,

I'm sure I don't have to tell you this. But, I hear people all the time talk about exercise this way or that way, this time is no good, you should exercise this time of day instead. Your heart rate should be this and not that, etc, etc. My feeling, any exercise is better that none. If it doesn't kill you, it's good exercise. I equate it to a buddy I have that watches these moon charts and other hooey about fishing. He won't go because it's not a good time according to blah blah blah expert. To me, exercise is kind of like fishing, there is no bad time to do it, just do it.

You seem like a smart guy. You look a little lazy, but who am I to judge. :D

On my best day and Bird's worst, I look (I have a black belt) lazy(er). Actually kind of proud of it. I am old, fat, balding (what's left is gray), poor, but otherwise charming.:D
