I have been performing multiple google searches and have been unable to determine what type of tree or shrub this is. They have clusters of nut ranging from 2 to 5 per cluster. They are approximately 12 - 15 feet high with multiple shoots vs one trunk. Squirrels love the nuts and I find husks all over the yard. Suspect a type of chestnut but have not been able t convince myself this is correct. Located approximately 16 miles south of Wisconsin state line in Central Illinois.

Perhaps a hazelnut?

All the best, Peter

There are quite a few nice free apps that can identify plants. Try “picture this” or “seek” or “plant identify”. All found this as an American hazel and can identify from photos or directly from the camera

It's a Hazelnut... Corylus Americana. I've got butt loads of them. The leaves do favor an American Chestnut and an American Beech.

Looks just like my hazelnut bushes. ;)

We call them filberts.

Multi trunk and leaves say hazelnut. You must have at least 2 of them. I've had 1 for a long time and haven't had any nuts. Transplanted a 2nd and 3rd one near it last year. Originally planted 2, but one died.
