Yeah, no foolin'!

You'd wonder why, if it was in the middle of a field, would he care about what direction if fell and what prompted them to get an excavator out?

Maybe what the OP saw was the first cut on the notch and the guy pinched the blade, so they got the excavator out to get it out? Maybe?

If we're going to talk chainsaws; it's bar not blade. Bar and chain. Knives have blades. Just saying, if one wants to be taken seriously, no offense meant, just suggesting using the correct terminology.:thumbsup:
