Trespassing signs, etiquette, good & bad neighbors

So for you folks with the no-tolerance approach to keeping people off your property: Do you provide another mechanism for people to contact you if they need something (such as a phone number on your no-trespassing sign)? Or is it just "if I didn't ask you to be here I don't care who you are or why you need me"?

The phone number on my sign goes to voice mail, leave a message and if I want to or need to talk or see you I will call you, otherwise stay away and keep off my property.
In my entire life, including living at home as a child not once has someone came unannounced that my family or me wanted to see. If they were welcome they would have been invited and wouldn’t have needed to trespass to begin with!

From a security standpoint, easy access can make it easy to case your place, under some other pretense, like being lost or delivering flyers. It's less attractive to break into a place, you know nothing about.

Jeez, that's sad. I've had hundreds and hundreds of friends and family stop by unannounced in my life. I've had probably a dozen people come up and knock on my door and ask if I ever give permission to hunt on our remote property ( I like that they ask, but I already have someone hunting out place, my neighbor). I can pretty much count on one of my neighbors show up in my yard if I'm outside doing something. Happened just yesterday while my wife and I were cutting down a long-overdue-for-it tree. We always go back and forth between yards with our neighbors.

Out on our remote property, about every other time I'm out there, someone will see my truck and stop in and shoot the bologna with me.

I just cannot imagine what it's like to not have people stop by. :confused3:

Well maybe you consider it sad that strangers don稚 stop and bother me unannounced, I don稚!
My friends are always welcome, so are most of my family and they still have the respect to call ahead. I don稚 really need them to but we were all brought up to respect others privacy so we call.
The twist you bring to this is from trespassers to people with open invitations to come on your property. Meaning they have permission to stop buy when they want. This takes them out of he realm of unannounced trespassers to welcome guests. Not the same thing as the guy just coming to ask if they can hunt. Which by the way if he was welcome to hunt here the property would not be posted and he wouldn稚 need to defy the No Trespassing signs to ask permission. As stated he could have called the number on the sign and waited for a response!

Yesterday I drove out into the mountain to visit a friend who has a similar road out to his place, guess what I called and let him know I was going to stop by first. He probably wouldn稚 mind me just stopping by knowing I actually have a key for his house, barn, shop and all his cars for in case of emergency. Guess I知 welcome anytime but I still call first. It痴 called Respect!

My thoughts exactly. None of my friends, family or neighbors (people I'd "want to see") need to call ahead and let me know they are coming. Sure, if they do that's nice, but I would never be irritated by them coming unannounced. I guess I'm just more tolerant than some folks.

My Dad is terrible for showing up unannounced and univited to friends, neighbours and even strangers. Mostly, just likes to freeload on hospitality.

BUT, INSISTS you call first before visiting him! Funny how people can be like that.

Remember too that not everybody is always 'dressed for company' when out in their own yard that is not visible from public spaces. Unannounced visitors can lead to considerable embarrassment to all.

Always have a dress ready to answer the door. Seem startled and say you were expecting someone else.

I’m not irritated that they feel different than me. I am however irritated that they want to have us change the language or incurr extra cost like building a fence because they want to reap the benefits of the no tresspassing sign with some but not others and feel exceptions should be made.
Fact is if they want exceptions they are the ones that should be adding to thier signs.

Maybe something like this

No Tresspassing
Unless you fall under
One of the following
Terms or conditions
and then list all
the reasons they would
Tolerate trespassing.

I wonder what impact that sign would have on a trespasser wanting to stalk the place?
