Trespassing signs

Like poster above, the plastic signs have not worked for me. The metal signs are durable, but the nails seem to work their way out of the trees. I used long roofing nails because I thought the large head would help keep them fastened. Now I am thinking maybe a decent size wood screw with some washers? Any suggestions?

Do you drive the nails tight against the sign? The growing tree will force the sign out, pulling the nails. It is better to leave some space between the nail head and sign. It also gives you some thing to pull the nail out with later. A screw head will be rusted so you can't remove it.

I have had so many issues/problems with intruders / trespassing / poaching/theft etc. the chief of local LE & local judge & PA game comm. advised me to keep my property posted . Posting has never stop the ahole from doing there ahole thing . But ,LE says without posting they can't /won't do much about it .
I've been however looking for a specific sign . Tyvex roll ,florecent orange background, black lettering , No Trespassing A few years ago I saw these used & would like to find this sign. Any help?
Over the years I've been creating very thick natural hedge perimeter using thorntrees, binlaudinjaggers, poision ivy vines, and dozing brush piles into places. This has proven the best deterant against the arrogantaholes.

I have not seen ORANGE signs. The ones here are yellow. I have got them from HD, Lowes, and maybe TSC. NC is very specific about the size of the sign so make sure what you buy meets the legal requirements along with spacing on the property line.

Later,
Dan

I used roofing nails but the signs would eventually pull out as the material decayed. Then I started using the nails with a green plastic washer. This has helped but the paper will still decay and go away. The green plastic washer helps find the danged nail if you drop one. :D

Sometimes the bark is so thick that the nail is not quite long enough with either nail and I have move the sign a bit.

It's unbelievable what some will do on posted ground including trying to push/pull over steel locked gates, get hung up on steep dirt piles/barriers on old roads, break into buildings that are locked, shoot thru sheds/buildings, shoot deer, silent drive deer, steal Christmas trees, camp, partying, etc, etc, etc. I've heard every excuse in the book from those who I caught trespassing and I let 95% go and tell them I give only one warning.

I've seen the orange background signs. Believe it was at a local hardware store -- True Value or Ace. Might try to find them on the web.

Being the Tree geek that I am I use a nylon line that is UV resistant if I can. Reason being is it is no fun hitting nails and screws with a chainsaw if that tree needs to be cut up. I leave a bit of slack in the line to allow for growth.. Plain old nylon line will work for a long time. I like the one posters idea of thorns and poison ivy!

You guys peaked my interest as I had always assumed the worst in our state (Washington) figuring that owners were on the short end of the stick, but low and behold I found I am in pretty good shape about getting sued if someone gets hurt on the property.

A good quick read

Seattle Washington Personal Injury Lawyer Legal Articles | Amicus Personae | Supreme Court Update: Recreational Use Immunity | King County, Tacoma, Sea Tac, Olympia

The law also says you can take reasonable measures to protect yourself and property but they draw a pretty hard line on bodily injury. Basically force must equal force. You feel you are going to be killed, you can shoot, but if someone is just trespassing all you can do is ask them to leave

Castle doctrine

The statute in Washington state appears to be very simply and broadly stated.[31]
The law allows use of deadly force in the lawful defense of oneself, a family member, or any other person, when there is reasonable ground to prevent action(s) of the person slain to commit a felony or to do injury or harm, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished; or in the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, on those in their presence, or upon or in a dwelling, or other place of abode, in which they are.
Washington state doesn稚 have a specific Castle Doctrine law, but has no duty to retreat as precedent was set when the State Supreme Court found "that there is no duty to retreat when a person is assaulted in a place where he or she has a right to be

Growing up in upstate NY, trespassing wasn't in issue, small town and farms. As kids a dirt bike was your mode of transportation. Tread lightly and drive around the edge of the fields. Most of us worked on the farms and we helped one another. If you did something wrong someone would always set you straight, boss, neighbor, parents, even the other kids in school. You could run but not hide. Anyway.

One farmer had trouble with trespassers, people 4 wheeling; the law wasn't much help even when caught so he took measurements of tire prints, how long they where and how much crops were damaged & destroyed. Added it all up for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cutting and took them to small claims court. Half an hour later he got awarded a nice check for $1,800. for lost profit.

Another neighbor dropped tree across one of his roadways and caught a guy cutting it up to get through. That turned out to be a special type of log that was drying for a sawyer to replace a beam in his barn. Not sure what he got in court for that one.

A lot of farmers would put several loads of manure in a pile in front of trail head as a deterrent if things started to get out of hand. They would have a good laugh thinking about that person who tried to drive over or through a 3-4ft high pile of crap.

As it turns out one of my buddies drove through one. He said the smell was unbearable as the manure got shoved in the engine bay and on the hot exhaust. He drove to the local car wash with the front hubs locked in because he didn't want to touch them.

I use long construction screws and predrill my plywood signs that I paint with stencils I made. I go up my ladder and put the screws into the tree and leave a couple inches outside the sign to give the tree room to keep growing.
